Hi all, been a while since I was here last but yet again needing your well valued advice. We bought a new-to-us 1996 Lunar twin axle 5 berth van which is in great condition. It's max tow weight is 1450 and unladen weight is 1200. Our mondeo estate (max tow 1500) has pulled it for the only holiday we had before the winter but we have been told the mondeo is going to have to be put to rest next year . We would welcome advice on what the best tow car would be for a replacment and are satrting to think about it now so our local dealer can be on the look out for us - we are not in the position to be buying a new vehicle. There are 5 of us although usually only 4 on holiday and have a lab and often take bikes away but are not very tall to have the bikes on the roof so the car will need to be able to have a rear bike rack. Looking forward to getting your replies.

If you managed well with the Mondeo Estate then another one of those is probably going to work for you.
I went for a second hand Discovery, but I also need to drag trailers into remote offroad fields. I have a bike rack that fits to the rear door, through the spare wheel, which carries 4 bikes and still allows me to tow the caravan.
The old shape Mondeo is getting cheaper now due to the new one coming out.We have the old shape estate which has a max tow of 1800kg Its the diesel and to be honest you could easily forget you were towing It drives fantastic! Its only a year old though. The only concern we have with the car is the 75kg noseweight so we are careful with the loading, we dont take bikes and the kids come in their own cars.
Nice response Big Al, I was a little scepticle when I first read the post.
I would agree with some of the other posts. If the Mondeo worked well for you last time, then why change? there is a Mondeo out there for just about every budget. If you are taking passengers then you might also want to consider self levelling suspension, that came as standard on the Ghia X.
Steve.

Thanks for the repies - we have always had a low nose weight having a renault initially (50kgs) and the new van nose weight is 75kg. It looks like the mondeo is the one to be looking out for so far!

Thanks for the info, but I was not aware the the BMW's DXI 3 ltr power pack was no good as a tow car. All the mags are going crazy in Germany, NL and Austria as a tow car. I got most of my information from www.BMW.de , www.ADAC.de and www.camping-cars-caravans.de. Not as though I could ever afford one anyway but as a Ford man I do like the new Mondeo.
If you fancy a 03 frontera 2.2 diesel with 35000 miles and fsh for £6000 then get in touch as i am selling mine due to company car arriving craking towcar and not quite as big as other 4x4 so ideal for an everyday car i tow my van 1420 with no problems think it is about 80% so would do your no problem also.
