What engine was in your 190, Top-Dog?
Our 190 is a 2 litre and it tows our van nicely, but our van is a lot lighter than the one in question.
The E class is a lot heavier and therefore should make for a better towcar. A lot of reviews of the C class say the C180 is underpowered, so I would be dubious about it as a tow car.
Our 2 litre 190 as I say pulls quite well, but is very heavy on fuel when towing, as low as 12 mpg with a good nose wind. For that reason, I am thinking of a bigger engined E class when I change, or possibly a Discovery. I do love the Merc, but the build quality on the newer ones I beleive has gone to the dogs, so am considering joining the Essex Tractor Brigade. Ultimately, it comes down to fuel consumption and how an E320 compares to a Disco 2.5tdi. Both on paper look reasonable. The other option is an LPG converted petrol engine as I have in my 190, but I have my doubts about how long the savings are going to be available with that as LPG is catching up with petrol quite quickly.
