Does anybody tow with a Mercedes C180 Kompressor Auto? We are thinking of purchasing one to tow our Bailey Pageant Burgendy and are wondering how well they perform.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Jo

I would have thought it would be a bit underpowered myself. The towing limits on the C class are relatively small too in comparison to the E class. Just did a search, Couldn't find the C180 Kompressor, but the normally aspirated and the C200 Kompressor are withing 50 KG of each other. The van in question is just inside this limit, but does put you well over the 85% and bordering on 100% so it is not an outfit generally recommended.

I towed with a Merc 190  basic model for 5 years before I got my 2.8 short Frontera, didn`t have any probs and it looked nice out on the road,  don`t know about the c180 kom but with it being newer than my old merc Im sure it would pull just as well ,

What engine was in your 190, Top-Dog?

Our 190 is a 2 litre and it tows our van nicely, but our van is a lot lighter than the one in question.

The E class is a lot heavier and therefore should make for a better towcar. A lot of reviews of the C class say the C180 is underpowered, so I would be dubious about it as a tow car.

Our 2 litre 190 as I say pulls quite well, but is very heavy on fuel when towing, as low as 12 mpg with a good nose wind. For that reason, I am thinking of a bigger engined E class when I change, or possibly a Discovery. I do love the Merc, but the build quality on the newer ones I beleive has gone to the dogs, so am considering joining the Essex Tractor Brigade. Ultimately, it comes down to fuel consumption and how an E320 compares to a Disco 2.5tdi. Both on paper look reasonable. The other option is an LPG converted petrol engine as I have in my 190, but I have my doubts about how long the savings are going to be available with that as LPG is catching up with petrol quite quickly.

Thanks for the advice guys, we'll probably stick with our peugeot 407 2.0 hdi for now which is an excellent tow car.

Thanks again  Dave & Jo.

I use my c180 2006 model to tow my bailey ranger. It's ok. Not great . It's all I've got fine for weekends away. If your towing all around Europe etc get something bigger and diesel. Don't rush load it properly
