join either big club and book up for a towing /manovaring course they will teach you all about loading your van hitching up to it and safe driving as well as reversing.
as far as safe weight for towing if you caculate 85% of the tow cars KERB weight and don't exceed that as the Maximum Techanically Permited Laden Mass of the caravan you buy should be OK.

Just remember when towing allow extra room over taking parked cars and allow more time to pull out of junctions and pulling on to round abouts, relax and do not let other road users push you in to driving faster than you feel safe at, remember maximum speed limit on a single carriageway IE:- A road is 50mph ,maximum speed limit on a dual carriage way or moterway is 60mph towing a braked trailer/caravan.

Have fun remember you are going on Holiday so no need to rush.

Oh yes, it's very easy to tow a caravan!  Its doing it without hitting anything which is a bit tricky!!

Mr Ulti-mates was scared witless at the prospect of towing a caravan. In fact, we bought one and he wasn't brave enough to tow it home!  Instead, we had to get my parents (experienced vanners) to fetch it for us from Lincolnshire.

However, he soon took very warily to the roads and although at first it was definitely a white-knuckle sort of experience, he gradually found it easier and less stressful.  Unfortunately for Mr U-M, our first caravan storage was down 50 yards of bendy lane, with high stone walls and only inches to spare each side of the van.  The neighbours used to put out their hanging baskets and wheelie bins deliberately to make it even more of an obstacle course!

He did also invest about £75 for one of the Caravan Club's manoeuvring courses and that added to his confidence enormously, even though it doesn't focus on road towing.  In fact, I have to say he is now brilliant at reversing the van right onto the exact spot within a pitch (and without spoiling the grass for everyone else with tyre tracks).

We're towing to France this year, which is a measure of how the confidence grows from those early days.  Not much troubles Mr U-M these days when he's towing, unless its a small market town (on market day) with a dustbin lorry and a bus to squeeze between!  I'd go so far as to suggest he even enjoys towing.

- and you can hire caravans, although this might not be cheap if you don't already have a towbar fitted -  and you would feel rather committed to buying a van if this is the case.

I towed home yesterday for the second time!  I was nervous the first time and a bit nervous yesterday, but it was fine.  As they all say above, just take it steady.  I am sure that if you have a friend/relative with a caravan they would take you / your hubby out for a try in a large car park, industrial estate etc.  I think that driving on a busy road is actually easier than manouvering!  I leave the difficult bits of faffing around to hubby and the motor mover!!

Have fun and dont worry - the hardest part is the first five minutes, then you are up and running.

Nicky

Reversing depends on the size of the car and the size of the trailer, or more importantly the ratio of the distance between axles (front, rear and trailer). A small TT with a short distance between the rear car axle and the trailer axle is much more difficult to reverse than a large caravan with a long distance between the rear axle and the trailer axle. Artics have a short distance between front axle and rear axle, and a long distance between rear axle and trailer axle(s) and therefore are easier to reverse (although obviously bigger).

Personally I always use the mirrors when reversing, never try and turn round and see behind, and steering wheel movements work in the opposite way to what one does normally when reversing. Practise makes perfect!

Hi I've been towing our 'van for 3 years now.  I tow Hubby navigates as I get car sick when map reading.  Good tip for reversing, if you want to turn the 'van left stick your left arm out straight and pull the steering wheel with your right hand.  If you want to turn the 'van right stick your arm out the window and pull the steering wheel down with your left hand.  You might feel silly but it works.  Remember slow speeds are easier to correct problems the faster you got the faster a mistake will happen.  Enjoy!

for reversing remember the 1st Law of Physics EVERY ACTION HAS AN EQUAL & OPPOSITE REACTION ie put your wheel left & your vans back end goes right - but remember to steer the opposite way as this reaction takes place if you need to straighten up  for example if you need to turn 90 degrees ,try asking your local farmer if you can have a go with his trailer/tractor combo as they are slower/ lower geared

As above, but if your trailer has 4 wheels then if you turn left, the back end of the trailer goes left not right ( or am I doing this wrong as well

The last 100 yards of any journey with the caravan are the most difficult.
