I don't care how many polar bears, trees or penguins die... Or even if the Maldives sink without trace. I'm sticking with 'old bangers' for the forseeable future. I'd happily spend £200 - £300 a year on repairs & maintenence (admittedly it'd be DIY) than throw £400 at the government's black hole every year... Yeah, I know I'll still have to pay £200ish VED but the other £200 that I'm not paying will go towards the servicing... And at least I'll have exchanged the cash for goods or services with real, local businesses...

Its a joke, .... if only :(

Lets all sell our caravans and big cars, then jump on a Ryanair flight for £30 to somewhere foreign, surely that will stop global warning wont it? Then we can spend our 'hard-earnt' boosting some foriegn economy rather than supporting the UK holiday industry.

Not only do we have to pay more tax if we choose to drive our vehicles, we also have to pay more for owning them! Surely the caravan club and similar organisations should be doing something to help reduce caravan / motorhome users tax burden because we are greener!

Surely we need to find out when this tax change is due to take place, send our tax discs in for a surrender refund & tax again just before the increase comes into force. This'll give another year at the old rate at least.

What concerns me more than the increase in tax is the devaluation of vehicles that comes with it. No one is going to want to buy cars in the higher bands, they'll become worthless. Lots of people are gong to be paying for vehicles that aren't worth what they owe on them.

As Mallett61 says it only applies from cars from Y reg on. So another option is to buy a big smoker, say an old 3 litre land cruiser that can produce more bad gasses than a modern powerstation and you will only have to pay £185 a year.

Or get something in excess of 25 years old and pay no tax (at least I guess they havent altered that law?). I guess you could just have the old smoker on clasic low milage insurance and just use it for towing.

It's crazy, create more polution with an old vehicle and pay less tax, we really need to lobby someone about this, I'm sick of paying too much tax.

Another option is to buy an older japanese import car, we've done that a few months ago and it looks as though we'll avoid the tax increases.  We have a 1997 Nissan Elgrand (large people carrier 3.2 litre diesel) and this only pays £210!  Fantastic...until they decide to backdate it until the dawn on time because they aren't making enough money...

The japanese import market is flourishing because of this.  They have no salt on their roads and the cars look immaculate even though they are 11 years old!  Ours looks as though it is just out of a showroom, albeit a slightly dated interior.  Take a look at some of the imported cars if you are thinking of down/up grading in the near future...

At this rate they'll be applying tax on the bloke that used to walk in front of model T ford with the red flag!

After Gordon Browns speech on Friday about listening to the people. I wonder if this will be one of the things that he will listen to the people about. I won't hold my breath for the answer.

I would think that the best we can hope for is reinstating the 10% tax bracket, car tax and fuel tax as well would be asking too much.

As far as I can understand it the figures the DVLA use for setting fuel tax are those on your registration document. We paid 170 pounds recently and that looks as if it will go up to 210 next year.
