I've had a Mondeo TDCi 130 now for 4 weeks and it pulls our Pageant Burgundy at 1400kgs like a dream, and returns 32mpg.

I also have a 52 plate Mondeo Zetec 2.0 130 Esate and she pulls like a train.  No contest ... Mondeo every time.  Search on here for Zafira - I have heard they are not the best towcars.

My "old" Mondeo 130ps failed in a spectacular manner just weeks after it changed hands. I had driven it for three years and it never let me down.

Two weeks later the dual mass flywheel fell apart and a week after that the injectors went.

The new owner was saddled with a bill for over £2500....

Maybe they are designed for three years/90000 miles and not much more.

I have also read about the dual mass flywheels going on the ford forums. I really like the Mondeo and was ready to buy one until I read up a little more.

I had a 1.8 Zafira and that struggled to pull a small folding camper.  It was a dreadful towing car.  It managed on an even road but even the smallest incline it struggled terribly!

i can only comment on the zafira and not the mondeo.
I find it to be a great towcar - but it will depend on the model you get.
The older Zafiras had very low tow limits (well the diesels did).
From the new shape (55 reg and on i think) the weights are much better.
We have the 150ps model and it has plenty of power and can tow well on motorways in 6th.
Just my 2pence worth

As Ive said before TDCi`s are costing a fortune at about 90k, if buying used make sure the Dual mass fly-wheel has been changed, and the clutch, starter motor and have the injectors checked over. Dual mass flywheel replacement £1k, injectors £1k +.

I agree with the above comments that the Mondeo TDCi is a fine towing vehicle, especially the 130 bhp. But if your buying used be very careful.

We changed from a Kia Sorento to a new style Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 (150) and are very happy with the change. The Kia towed fantastically but the cost of diesel was fantastic too!! The zafira pulls our Ranger 500/5 with no problems

Hi, we have both cars, and also tow a bailey ranger 550/6.  I would echo the earlier comments that any kind of incline and the Zafira does struggle.  My OH got a Mondeo 2.0 Tdci a few months ago, and we've towed the van a couple of times since then, it's a brilliant tow car, really is.  I'm afraid I can't answer any technical comments about MPG or anything else, as I just fill up the car when i'm told !!!
