My old Honda CR-V was a little heavy on petrol at around 29 mpg solo, not sure what it was when towing, but it had done 143,000 by the time I px'd it. Never had a problem with it.
We changed to a new CRV diesel and so far I'm getting 42 mpg (Urban) with 3000 miles on the clock so I'm expecting the mpg to improve a little more as the engine runs in. Towing I got about 35-37 mpg on the last trip, but again I'm expecting this to improve as time goes on. I haven't taken it on the motorway for any length solo yet so can't say what that would be like.
Overall with 3000 miles of combined solo and towing I've done around 35 mpg which on first look isn't great but some of that was towing when the car had only done around 600 miles which used up more fuel. The second time of towing gave better figures.
