Hi there

Can you tell me if our Ford Mondeo 1.8 petrol 1998 is ok for towing a 4 berth caravan and if so what makes etc,, as I have had enough of tents!

I wasnt sure if it had to be at least a 2 litre or not?

Thanks!

It depends on the caravans all up weight (MIRO), your cars kerb weight and its max towing capability (which differs depening on the version of the 1.8 that you have).

See www.whattowcar.com as an easy way to find a match for your car.

I can tell you that your choice will be very limited though as you are going to have to find a very light caravan.

It is not the MIRO of the caravan that needs to be considered but the MTPLM - also known as Max Authorised Mass or Weight.

Have a look here which gives an indication of towing limits and kerbweights for 1.8 Mondeos, obviously you need to check out the exact figures for your car, but it seems that any caravan up to about 1100 Kgs MTPLM would be within it's capabilities.

Providing that you are not wanting to buy a brand new one there are plenty of caravans about that are 4 - 5 berth and within this weight. Look specifically at pre 2000 ones, as they tended to be lighter than current models.

I used to have a 1997 5 berth Avondale that was 1100 Kgs.
