The dealer have advised that they cannot fit a swan neck towbar to a honda CRV. I am not sure why this is but I assume it is something to do with the ground clearance or something.
My plan B is, therefore, to get a normal towbar/ towball fitted and replace the towball with an ALKO one (I already have one on my other car, so this won't be a particular problem to me.).
Will there be any problems in doing this - does anyone else have an ALKO towball fitted to a honda CRV
Your dealer is talking rubbish bosal do one for a start, also westfalia Ive seen current CRVs fitted with swan necks.
Swan necks cannot be height adjusted tho & sometimes towbars fitted to 4x4 can be too high which is why your dealer may only want to fit a bolt on, if this the case just ask him to fit an Alko towball.

If you click my links you will see there are non-detachable swan necks. the 3 makers of swan neck towbars I can think of are Bosal, Brink & Westfalia.
A detachable centainly shouldnt rattle when you are towing & when you are not they should be removed & kept in the boot. I would say the main reason for a detachable is cosmetic, apart from not banging your shins putting stuff in the boot.

Have read all the above comments with interest. We already have the oldest version of the Honda CR-V and are looking to upgrade to the latest version. Can anyone let us know how they feel it is performing as a tow car. We have been extremely pleased with the original CR-V
The reason given to me by my Honda dealer is that a fixed towbar partially obscures the no plate, albeit minimal, and they would not fit it themselves to avoid any comeback in the unlikely event that the police took action. I had the same response from a peugeot dealer when I wanted one fitting to a 306 a few years ago.
hi got new crv 6 months ago, tows like a dream ,43 mpg solo,25 to 30 mpg towing,2.2 deasel manual ,van load 1400kg,tow bar fitted at dealers 450 pounds, great tow car andy

If you are talking about a CRV then that is one hell of a size tow bar!!
The number plate is at least 12"-18" above the bumper!!

Thanks
We had the Mk2 petrol CRV for a few months which led us to buy the new diesel version. So far it has performed perfectly with good MPG. The true test will be in August when we take the van to dorset and devon. Very pleased with it.
The bottom of the number plate on my CRV is only 400mm from the ground ,I don't Know where you get 12inches above the bumper from unless youre referring to the front one!!
