I've just returned from my second ever outing with our van.

I've got a 2000 passat 1.8 20v petrol and an 80's elddis super cyclone (889 kg GW)

The caravan was cheap as we didn't know how we would take to caravanning or towing and the car was bought long ago before it was even considered.

On our first trip the reduced traction and increased load were more than obvious so I decided that a tow rope might be of use in some situations.

After the rain this weekend it did come in very useful and allowed me to get the front wheels onto gravel rather than grass if I'd been hitched directly. I'm sure we would have been helped by others nearby, but it made life a lot easier. I'd suggest one is part of any one elses kit if they have a 2 wheel drive car.

Good advice never been without one after a bogged down incident some years ago. Rarely used but essential at times.

Ive done that myself!

worst case, on a CL, owners out, and no-one else on the site, I did tie the hitch to the front of the car, and reverse it right out of the site, then put it on correctly!

tried it the right way round, just not enough traction.

We keep one, even with a 4 x 4 useful to pull things out of the mud in our "summer".

As a matter of interest if you use a tow rope to get out of a difficult situation where do you tie it to the van ?

I've always managed to do the good old round turn and two half hitches to the rear (very carefully) of the tow hitch.

I just loop it through the A frame, and back over the top, so its just behind the hitch, but passes under it too.
