I sold my discovery 2 manual and van 18 months ago, because of a job change now we`d like to go down that road again as we missed it so much.
I would still like a discovery 2 but an auto this time as it will only do about 5000 miles a year and most will be towing the van.
Have any of you had any problems with the auto`s, as i have never had one but have driven an auto before. Whats fuel cost compared to manual. Also what twin axle van could i get for £7000 with two single beds at rear for my older chilrden so they are partitioned off from one another
Many thanks.
colin.

overheat problems seem to be the issue but this is generally through poor quailty, lack off, or old oil.
first thing to do is change the oil and screen filter in the box, and have a good look at the magnet that will be sat in the bottom of the box sump.
benefits of the auto are an easier drive as the clutch and gear changing on a manual can be heavy going, and must autos come with cruise control, a blessing.
aim to get about 3mpg less than on a manual, but that said some vehicles,i'd argue were built to be autos, and this is one. lets face it you dont buy a 4x4 for its fuel return as well you know.
mat
i think it goes without saying then that i love my disco 2a auto.

I have an auto TD5, with which I tow a single axle Bailey Pageant across the Navarra desert every year.
In the 3 years we've had it, the TD5 has blown a fuel pump (crossing Spain) a faulty temperature sender on the transmission (Yorshire Dales) and faulty temp sender on the Engine (Spain). I have mine serviced by a local competent garage, who took me through all the issues mentioned correctly in the earlier post regarding oils and cleaned filters. ~Your LR dealer will charge you £200 to clean the filter. They rinse the gauze in parafin!!
I've driven Land Rovers most of my driving life (I'm 40) would never consider driving a manual 4x4 again. The ease canot be overstated, particulary when manouvering in tricky spots (no burning clutch) and in UK traffic (no leg ache) or on cold starts (no lumpy gear box).
I cannot overstate the joy of the meteoric starts on an auto box with 2 tonnes of van on the back! Try that in a manual!!
