Car manufacturers specify a maximum tow weight for a trailer, and also a maximum train weight for the car + trailer. The maximum tow weight is based on what the car will pull up a 12% gradient.
The maximum train weight is the gross vehicle weight of the car plus the MTPLM of the trailer.
So ........... if your car with 5 adults and luggage didn't exceed the gross vehicle weight, and providing that the caravan wasn't loaded above it's maximum weight MTPLM and was within the max tow weight, and the total of the gross vehicle weight and the MTPLM of the caravan didn't exceed the train weight......... then you shouldn't have had a problem.
When towing slowly, try not to use the clutch to control the speed, get it up and use the throttle instead. Easier in a diesel as they have better low down power, but possible in a petrol if you are careful. Do the same when reversing to avoid clutch burn.
It was probably a one off due to the tight entrance.
