I am about to buy a caravan, have not had a towing caravan for a number of years. My tow car will be the Xsara Picasso 2ltr TDI, the max towing weight is given 1300Kg, the van I like is an Adria with a Maximum technical permissible laden mass 1450Kg do people buy this type of rig then not load it to the max? Or should I buy to the car spec, any help or thoughts on this mater would be apriciated.

If you tow the adria with your picasso you are going to be very limited as to how much you can load in your van also another point to consider is that if you were involved in any insurance claim it would be your word against the insurance companys as to how much weight was in the van at the time so perhaps a more suitable tow car would be a better option or a lighter van , perhaps one of the bailey ranger series might be more suitable as they have a lighter MTPLM
