the Quattro has a MTPLM of 1555 kgs so if your S- max has a kerbweight of around 1800 kgs that will give you a match of around 86% also assuming your Ford has a suitable kerbweight make sure that it's maximum tow weight is also above the max weight of the van if not you will be commiting an offence if you exceed its limit so best to sure before taking to the road.
Further to my previous post have checked the kerbweight on the S-Max 2.0 diesel and is around 1743 kgs and is has a max tow weight of 1750 kgs so the Sprite Quattro will be a 89% match which will be o.k assuming you have some towing experience if not it would be wise to go on a towing course run by the C.C or the C&CC . The two main clubs advise a 85% to 100% tow ratio however this not law although very good advice
OK, I was working on the 1555Kgs given previously,
the S-max should still be fine towing it, and as gram says, you dont need to load it all up, I only have a 150Kg payload for this an, last one had 100!

practical caravan puts the MTPLM at 1555kgs for the Sprite Quattro FB twin axle
thanks for all your info i am new to caravans so i might look at something a little bit lighter, but my friend said that if i owned a ford galaxy i would be fine so might look at that option, as OH loves the van
It's a supervan we love ours . At 1550 kg max weight it's hardly a heavyweight infact i have several friends with shorter single axle vans that weigh 50 -75 kg heavier ! I reckon a 1.9 litre tdi diesel galaxy would be up to the job just keep the loading sensible . It works out at 82% match & gets a 5 star rating on www.whattowcar.com
we have the Ranger version of the Quattro and yes the van is great and our 4x4 tows it really well but it did struggle on the A30 this year so we're changing our car to a Kia Sedona at the end of the month after talking to another couple on the campsite with a twin axle and a Sedona. We had looked at the Seat Alhambra which has a slightly higher kerbweight than the Galaxy dependant on the model but even with that we think we'd struggle. I would seriously consider which option you're happier to change, we'd rather change the car than the van cause we love the van. Are you happier to change the car or your choice of van? Plus don't always go with what whattowcar says as sometimes it gives the wrong figures, check here for a better idea

ok been looking at cars came across a mitsubishi grandis, i know nothing about them but wondered what its like for towing this van, any help would be appreciated thanks
As far as reliabilty the Mitsubishi will be good the kerbweight is 1710 kgs so that will give you a 91% match, if your happy with that fine , the engine produces 134 bhp so should be ok but if loaded up along with loaded sprite quattro FB at 1555kgs it might struggle a little
