Guys/Girls

A quick one for you, I have just picked up my newish van (99' Abbey GTS 516) from Perth and driven back up the A9 to Elgin. I was quite surprised as to how quickley my Disco ran out of steam on to majority of the hills, even once in 4th I felt that it was a struggle to maintain 50mph. The question I am asking is what have your experiences been when towing a 1200-1300Kg van with a 200/300 Tdi Disco, are my expectations too high?

I've only driven one solo, but an unaerodynamic heavy car with 111bhp and a 1.2 tonne caravan is not going to be fast.

On the other hand, it has the gears to go anywhere, at its own speed. I don't think it follows that there's anything wrong with it.

No doubt a Disco-owning 'vanner will be along soon.

Hi,

We've towed with a 300 Series Tdi, and it was disappointing. We have a Bailey Pagent, weighing in around 1800kg, plus 3 kids, bike rack etc.

Often on steep hills a Mondeo would hurtle past us...on the Motorways it was often not possible to pass lorries in any kind of headwind.

The best advice is just relax into it, 'cos it won't go any faster!! And remember to look smug. like you just wann drive that speed for a bit. According to this forum we're all psycopathic speed freaks overcome by our own self-esteem.

One life, live it slowly!!

200 Series are a bit quicker than the 300's due to the emission control system fitted to the later models ( although easy to disable - blank off the EGR valve if my memory serves me right !) . Adding a bigger intercooler will up the power output a bit but at the end of the day TDI disco's are plodder's . They will do the job at there own speed 50 - 55 is comfortable . They are quite prone to cylinder head gaskets blowing & it isn't alway obvious when it happens so it may be worth getting a compression test done ? I know people that tow 1500 - 1600kg caravans with them but they're retired and in no great rush to get to their destination !!

Have you checked the caravan's brakes are not sticking on?

Nothing to do with that I just like Landrovers, and I was asking Landrover Discovery drivers so if you could poke off that would be great!!!

Like I said costructive would be good!  As it happens I find the Disco very comfortable and stable both when towing and solo.  But were I live and for what I do I also need a competant off roader and the Disco does just fine in that department.  It is my 3rd green oval product and other than routine maintenance they have all been just fine.  Now dont get me wrong Landrovers can be a pain in the a*"se but so can other cars and I know plenty of people that have moved away from LR only to come back as their new choice of vehicle could'nt cope with what was thrown at it.  So its all swings and round abouts really.  At least LR parts are cheap which is more than can be said for Jap stuff, so when it does go wrong it does not cost the earth!

rb199, this might give you some comfort that nothing is amiss -

Using the whattowcar.com site: selecting a Defender 90 2.5tdi (the only LR variant listed with the 111bhp engine) suggests that on a 1 in 20 gradient the top speed would be around 55mph or less, and (5 speed gearbox) 5th gear would be "not applicable" and top speed (depending what assumptions you make on load) might actually be reached in 3rd.

It's really just a power, weight and drag equation, but unlike with a low-powered 'normal' car, hill starts and steep hills are no problem when you have low enough gears

Hey you guys I tow with the 300tdi (the Muppet) its an auto and it pulls my 1500kg van all over the place at 60 on motorways no problems at all on the longer hills that you find on A & B roads it doesn't get into top gear but hey it gets there and in safety and comfort

The Head Gasket problem is due to lack of maintenance if the drivers looked after their vehicles better even opening the bonnet now and again they would notice that the coolant level has gone down and then they would either look for the leak or take it to a garage to be sorted the problem is due to the P gasket which is behind the water pump not a hard job but a hell of a lot cheaper than a new head
