I Have been asked to tow a twin axle trailer from the UK to Italy and return with a beach buggy on the trailer. I know its not a caravan but I guess there are similarities. I'm looking for the following advice in no particular order, as im a novice towing abroad.

1. Best route Calais to near Rome?
2. Approximate cost for tolls?
3. Towing restrictions or laws for France,Switzerland and Italy?
4. Any tips on towing a twin axle? I normally tow a single axle.

Thank you

Hi pageant man, give www.mappy.com or www.viamichelin.co.uk a try as regards the route, as far as towing a twin axle goes, just the same as the single except when reversing it takes a wee bit more time, just take it easy and you'll be fine.

Good luck

Bryan

If you are going out empty then your biggest problem will be remembering you have a trailer on the back! You possibly won't feel it and may not see it. The rest is easy.

There are several routes, in the past I have travelled to Italy via Switzerland using the St Gotthard Tunnel. Easy route but you will need to buy two motorway passes for Switzerland.

As long as the twin axle trailer is attached to the tow vehicle you can treat it pretty much the same as a single axle. However, if you un-hitch it don't expect to be able to manouvre it single handed unless you're built like Desperate Dan...
Best thing about a car transporter trailer is that you can see exactly where it's going when you're reversing - no blind spots.

If the beach buggy is a VW beware that the engine is at the back and if you load it on facing forwards all the weight will be hanging over the rear axle which will be unstable.

I know from experience as I reversed a normal car (front engined)on to a twin axle trailer and it snaked horrendously at anything over 45mph even being towed by a Range Rover.

Cheers

Nick
