Hi, does anyone know if a renault scenic 1998, 1.9 RT diesel would pull our abbey 1050kg unladen. Have a terrano that pulls great, but wife wont drive it, so looking at scenic, cant afford 2 cars.

Aww that's not so good.

I'll have a look on the CC website and the CC&C. I'll let you know if I find it on there.

I'm an ex Grand Scenic owner - 30 trips to the dealer for faults to be sorted in the first 3 years of a brand new car has put me off Renault for life!

Contrary to the advice earlier, DO NOT look at whattowcar.com.   It completely ignores the very important (in the case of Renault) issue of Gross Train Weight.

The GTW is the maximum permissible weight of the car + contents (including people) + anything it tows.   With my Grand Scenic, this figure was 3050Kg.   Yours will be lower than this, I imagine.

The reason it's complicated is that Renault also quoted a "maximum tow" figure of 1300Kg. Now, it works out that to tow 1300Kg, there would be no weight allowance left for any luggage or passengers in the car, before exceed the permitted GTW. Nearly all other manufacturers have vastly higher GTW figures than Renault for some reason.

In practice, I worked out that the maximum weight I could tow with our Grand Scenic was around 1000Kg, still allowing for family and belongings.   Yours will be lower, as the Grand Scenic is a heavier car.   I bought a Bailey Ranger 470/4 (967Kg unladen).

I don't know the weight of your Scenic, but I would doubt you could tow 1050Kg and keep within the limits.

There are quite a few posts about this on this forum - search for Renault Scenic and you'll find them.

I've just changed from a Grand Scenic to a Toyota RAV4 - excellent at towing, and drives like a car.   On my commute to work (20 miles each way), I get 45mpg+ too.   I would strongly advise against buying Renault!

I would say a 10yr old Scenic would'nt be long for this world, even if you paid £500 for it in running order with a full mot any mechanical probs would probabley put the car beyond economical repair.

If you want a cheapie of this age I would look around for a diesel Mondeo, it would pull your caravan no probs & it is a nice comfy drive.

Buying a 10yr old car of any sort risks finding you have wasted your money unless you can get a year out of it, If your Terranos ok I would try again to persaude your wife to drive it.

Our Scenic 1.5dci has a quoted 1300Kg towing limit but, that is only when there is no luggage and only the driver in the car. When there is more than one person and luggage, the tow weight drops to 1000kg. Using the 85% rule that would give you a safe towing weight of 850Kg.

Our van has an unladen weight of 703Kg and a max weight of 1000Kg, however I doubt if I have ever had it at more than 800Kg.
