We have used ours in the passed and can't really see much difference, although they are incredibly handy for wetsuits and body boards to keep sand out the car on beach days

Just don't try and go under a barrier in a car park that your car will go through but your roof box can't

Some idiot I know did this

We used a roof box this year for the first time when we went to Germany. Certainly did not notice that it was there and given that you have tow at a lower speed in Germany our economy was a couple of mpg better!

Hi, I drive a VW Caravelle with two Boxes side by side on roof, bikes on rear rack and caravan hooked all across France.  Not a problem.  The roof box gives you good stowing space for stuff when weather turns bad.

Does not add to drag much as you are hauling a caravan anyway and allows you to keep a bit more weight on the tow vehicle and not pushing your 85% ideal against your caravan.  Try it.
