We have just bought a new model V70 D5 Geartronic and are having a Witter detachable tow bar fitted at the weekend. We researched the car thoroughly before buying and were happy with our choice but we've now come across the issue of noseweight.

Both the car and detachable towbar have a noseweight limit of 90 kg but 7% of the caravan's MTPLM of 1450kg is approximately 100kg. We will obviously have to stick with the lower figure of 90kg - will this affect stability of the outfit? I always thought 90kg was a generous figure but maybe not when you work out the maths!

Weight wise we are fine as the car's kerbweight is 1774kg, meaning we come in at below an 85% match.

Do I need to worry about the noseweight?

As caravans get heavier the 7% "rule" becomes less attainable. I am sure that a noseweight of 90kg will be fine.

Enjoy your new car

The 7% was a guideline only, not a rule. I too am sure that 90Kgs will be ok.

7% is a suggestion for he optimum noseweight but as others have pointed out with caravans get larger and heavier its almost impossible to achieve except with a 4X4. Having said that a 90kgs nose weight allowance is pretty good and should be achievable.

Hi nands I have a new 2008 Volvo V70 estate and have been trying to source a towbar. I have been told that there are none available yet for this car. I would be interested to know where you obtained your bar and the model No.

Thanks caravanman

Hi,

We are having a Witter detachable tow bar fitted by our local tow bar company (recommended by the Volvo dealership). We are paying £350 + vat.

The other alternative is an official Volvo towbar from the main dealer which is approx £800 I think!

The Witter website is:

http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/towbars/price_list.aspx

The model number for the detachable is VL42AQ. They also do a fixed which is VL45.

The new model V70 actually came out in 2007 as stated on the Witter website. Ours was one of the first to be registered and is a 57 plate registered in December 2007.

HTH

Hi

We also have a new V70 and I am trying source a towbar fitter, so far Kens Auto's have quoted £251.00 and Volvo £ 590.00...(bit of difference)..

I am now trying to find a mobile fitter who could come to our home, as youngest son is disabled and it'll be easier for me....

Any suggestions????(Ours is a 58,where the shape changed again!!)

Keren.

I'm just outside Worksop, and a mobile fitter from Beighton came to supply and fit my V70 towbar (2003) for (I recollect) £180. Any interest?
