Please could anyone recommend a good car for towing a caravan but also for use as a multi purpose vehicle i.e. shopping, taking grandkids out etc.

My husband is retiring and we don't want to have two vehicles.  Any advice gratefully received.

To help you we would need to know what you intend to tow (what 'van or its weight etc)

Let us know.

Plenty of people on her tow with cars rather than 4 x 4's.

We do for one (or is it two? Forgot about the OH. Sorry dear!!!)

Oh gosh, would have to wait til Hubby is home for weight etc.  It's a 4 berth and I think about 14ft but .. we want the new Eldiss Avante and that is a bit bigger.  I don't want to drive a true 4 x 4 and I definitely don't want a man car with stupid tarpaulin and lots of lights.  Something nice and sensible for an old lady!

There's 9 models in the new Avante range, so I think we need a bit more info as to which model you would like to tow.

Then we can get to work on finding a nice car for you.

For what it's worth I have been delighted with my diesel Mondeo (2.0 tdci). Take it steady on a solo run and 60mpg is easily achievable. It pulls our Avante 462 so easily and the BPW chassis with Winterhoff stabliser make it a dream outfit. You cam buy nearly new Mondeos for about 2/3 new price. The newest models are even better by all accounts and a tad heavier allowing a slightly heavier caravan. The S-max is also probably worth a look.
Best wishes.

Until you tell us the maximum weight of the caravan you want to buy & how much you want to spend on the car nobody will really be able to help you, but I suppose the car you describe could be any people carrier really, Galaxy or similar.

Interesting about the Mondeo cos we have one which we pull our caravan with but it is an estate cos hubby uses it for work.  I want something a bit more sort of not so long if you see what I mean.

However, thanks for the info.  Going to have another look at caravans tomorrow so will get all info then.

Thanks very much

Di
