Hi all,

Can someone please advise me on the recommended height of the tow ball on the back of a Car?

I have just had a new tow bar fitted to my car (53 plate Rav 4). I hooked the caravan (2009 Sprite Alpine4) onto it just to see how it looked. After standing back and scratching my head, I notice the rear of the caravan was a little bit more in the air than when it was on the back of my Senic!!!! Also the jockey wheels looks too close for comfort to the ground even when wound fully up.

I have measured the height of the towball and it is about 14.5 inches from the ground. Two questions really: the first is, is 15 inches too close to the ground and if so secondly, is there any way in raising it?

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly recieved as I would like to take it out on our first Holiday next Tuesday and would like to  be as safe as possable!!!!!

Cheers

Chris

I have just had a tow bar fitted today on my Honda CRV and was chatting to the fitter as i was worried about the height and he mentioned tha RAV 4 as being really low. I have no answers to your questions though, but there is a legal limit. I am sure others on this site could give you the info and probably will very soon!

From ground to center of tow ball should be between 350mm and 420mm.(Yours is at the lower level). If you need to raise the height then you will need to fit adapters to your cars suspension.

Hi

i have a friend who used to tow with the older model Rav 4 and he always had to remove the jockey wheel when towing.

He has now bought a later model and had a removable towbar fitted which he takes off when not towing so as the rear door will open .

All the earlier models tow low due to the rear door being low .

Strangely, I now own a RAV4 and used to own a Scenic too! Scenic was an awful car - in the dealers more than 30 times in its first 3 years - thousands of pounds worth of repairs done (all under warranty thankfully!).

The RAV4 is an '08 model with a detatchable tow bar which I think must be much higher than then yours.

However, I did have big problems with the old Scenic and the towbar being too low. It was below the minimum standard.   In the end, I rang Witter Towbars and spoke to some really helpful people there, who actually emailed me photos of their towbars on the same model of car as mine, with a height measurement rule.   I was amazed to find that the Witter towbar was about 10cm higher than the Renault equivalent (or somewhere close - it was 2-3 years ago and I forget the exact detail).

Also, I got some extra height by using an Alko towball instead of the standard ball.

I found Witter to be such a helpful company. It would be worth ringing them and seeing what they can do. I found the details on their website.

Many thanks for the advice so far. Looks like the way forward is to get adapters for the suspension.

Chances of getting that done before next Tuesday??? I can only try!!!!!

Andy R - We had megga problems with the Senic too. The final straw was the digital dashboard failing and leaving me not knowing speed or petrol level. Thank heavens for the Tom Tom!!!! I will never go back to a Senic.

Although I'm now having doubts about the RAV 4. I wish I done my homework!!!!!!

Cheers again

Chris

When we arrived at the CC site at Dunmore in Scotland after the bumps in the road towards Stranraer the jockey wheel was smashed on our old Bailey towing with our old style Rav4.

I would think a higher detachable tow ball would be best as Andy R suggested as higher suspension would upset the car when not towing unless its adjustable.

Andy

hi scott3
I've had 3 Rav 4s. the first one was the same model as yours with the same low tow ball. This is because the door runs all the way down and is inclusive of the bumper. If its a Witter towbar the cross member has 2 setting heights, the lowest one sets it an inch lower than the door bumper . the second one takes it very close and sometimes touches the underside of the door bumper. If you have to fit an extended height towball for use on an Alko coupling, the extra height of the ball rubs and catches on the bumper when the door is opened, therefore they will set it to the lower height. The real answer to this problem is a removable towball which sets the ball to the correct height.so you have to shut the door ,fit the ball & hitch up, arrive on site unhitch remove ball to open door.not as bad as it sounds,10 seconds to fit or remove the ball. I'm sure I read on the witter website somewhere that you can fit the removable towball to the original tow bracket with a fitting kit for £100. As you've just had this fitted you could always ask the fitter if he would change the make of towbar to one with a removable towball and pay the difference which is usually about £100.

There have been several recent threads on the subject of spring assisters. The general conclusion was that the MAD Spring Assisters were best.

You might like to look these up.

Just another thought. What is the nose weight of your van?

It is recommended that it be between 4% and 7% of the laden weight of your van. PLUS it should not exceed the 'max permitted drawbar loading' of you vehicle. I don't know what this figure is for your CRV but I guess that it will be betwee 50kg and 75kg. Perhape you might like to check that also.

Hi just checked height of towball on my new type rav4.It is set at 19.5 inches from the ground to top of the ball 18.5 to middle of ball. The law says it must be removable if it obscures the number plate. Old type rav4 number plate is fitted to left side of door so law dose not count .Every towbar fitter knows the problem of rav4 and should have advised you to fit a removable swan-neck towball .GO back to your fitter and see what he says. I would expect him to rectify it and keep his reputation intact. The new witter swan-neck stowbar can be turned sideways to open the door without being removed then turned upwright again

Hi,

Again, many thanks for all the advice. Very helpful would be an understatement!!!!!!!

I have now looked at all the options. I have decided to go with TOYRAV (George's) advice. I've contacted my 'towbar' person and he is coming around to fit the new swan-neck stowbar on Friday (What service!!!)

If I have any more difficulties I know where to ask!!!!  I can now look forward to our first trip next Tuesday to Sunny Dorset!!!!

Cheers

Chris

The height is surely controlled, within reason, by the height of the trailer attachment. You need either a level trailer, or about and inch pitch down at the towball end.

Hi Chris, great to hear your getting it sorted. I presume it was a witter bar, the cross member-should be set to the highest of the two set of fixing holes. have a great holiday (Is that a suntan or rust)
