My car is almost 3 years old, and when it is, the manufacturers warranty expires.

Is it worth extending it with the manufacturer (Ford), or should I pick one of the many warranty companies that are available, if so which one? Or should I not bother with one at all?

Your advice and suggestions are most welcome.

When my car turned three years old in September last year I took out an extended warranty with warranty direct.  I took out a belt and braces one which means I can continue to take my car to the BMW main dealer with any problems.  Even so it worked out a lot cheaper than the BMW extended warranty option.  So far I have used it just the once and it was fine, I booked it in with the dealer and gave them the warranty direct policy number.  I had to provide a copy of my MOT and service history but that was it, the rest was dealt with by the dealer and warranty company.

I prefer the peace of mind that a warranty gives me, but it wouldn't be right for everyone.

Hi

When my car turned 3 toyota offered me a warranty for a four figure sum, i managed to get one that seems to cover the same from the AA at a quarter of the price and it covers upto the value of the car. Given that the manufacturers are all struggling to stay afloat it seems stupid to outprice themselves in this way.

I always try to have a warranty as I need the car for work and have had a cam belt snap on a car where the cost was over £2000 to repair.

It does pay to shop around but make sure any you pick cover the engine management systems

Fat Bum's car was being serviced today and when we went to collect it another customer was asking how much it would cost to repair an engine where the cam belt had snapped. He had failed to take his car (05 plate) in for a service in good time previously (approx 6 weeks late) and vauxhall were not going to replace the engine as the service had happened too late (read the small print).

My car has just run out of its manufacturer's service and maintenance warranty, at the end of 4 years.  This covered everything except the tyres (I change them before the accepted minimum tread). The warranty covered parts and labour, with no excess, and even the MoT charge.  For the last MoT, they changed the cambelt before the test because the vehicle was coming up to 4 years old, even though the mileage was only 33,000.  It was £20.68 per month, based on 10,000 miles per year.

I take delivery of a new car on March 1, and think I will take out same cover again, even though it has gone up to nearly £28 per month.  It does give you a guaranteed outlay outlay on monthly running costs, with no unpleasant surprises.

Bertie.

When my Jazz turned 3, I paid for another year's warranty - cost me roughly the same as paying for another month's HP. It never needed anything doing under it, but it gave me peace of mind. I'm not sure if I'll bother again. I think it depends on the car - some seem to be problem cars and are always needing something doing, others just run for ever.

Just took out Tesco's all singing all dancing warranty. It covers everything and includes wear and tear items as well, only a month after taking it out wheel bearing went and no questions asked payed up prompt direct to dealer.
Car care the provider at 259.00 a year.
Think good value for money as my car 5 years old and got 67k on it!

All service up to date though and that matters.
