Hi

I have recently bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 to pull our 1760kg twin axle van.

The other day I noticed the overdrive button on the gear stick and was wondering if I should be using it.

Any advice would be great.

I just knock it out of overdrive on long climbs

Thanks for the reply Big Al

So when is the best time to use it and what does it do exactly?

Sorry I'm a 4x4 newbie!

overdrive is an old idea, mgb's and cars like that used to have it, before they invented 5th gear, its just like an extra half a gear for when your cruising on the motorways,

thats what it used to be so i assume it still is, mike

If yours is an automatic like mine the overdrive is just a torque lock up

it stops the auto slipping and loosing power

As big al says, on an auto O/D locks the torque converter, on a manual it is an extra 1/2to 1 full gear, but usually works over 3rd and 4th and should cut off automatically in 2nd.

Thanks for the replys.

Yes mine is an auto box. We took the van out with the Jeep for the first time at the weekend. I was puzzled as to why on some hills I was loosing power gradually. Applying more gas to compensate.

However when in cruise the engine would rocket me up the hill with no problem changing into whatever gear it needed.

I'll just try pressing the overdrive at the bottom of the hill before the climb and see what happens!

the cruise will select the best gear for the job.

on our previous car (Volvo 940) the advice was to deselect overdrive on hills and if necessary select a lower gear manually.

overdrive is just like an extra gear, should give better economy

on ours overdrive was automatically engaged on starting and the button disengaged it for hills.

Ummmm,

When you go up hill you will eventually loose momentum and speed, unless you apply throttle to maintain it.

Auto or Manual, overdrive or otherwise.  All your cruise control is doing is applying throttle without your input.

Cruise control does not select gears or control the gearbox.   That is a function of speed verses throttle, and happens automatically whether in cruise or not, (hence auto gearbox).

You can select gears that restrict the auto box to the lower ranges, but you cannot normally force it into the higher ranges.

I equate turning overdrive off to selecting the position below D on a conventional selector, you are just not getting your gearboxes top drive ratio, or the torque converter lock up.

Apart from getting your car into a better rev range before the hill, deselecting overdrive should have no effect on hill performance, because the box will just change down as it needs to anyway.

In a manual, they tended not to be recommended for towing, because they were sometimes weaker than the conventional gearbox, and thus prone to failure if used for towing.

All this should be clear in your car's manual. You have read it haven't you?

Good luck and trouble free towing to all!

MW

we also found the autobox on the 940 was set up for solo driving, so needed a "nudge" when towing.

The only time I ever move out of Overdrive [Auto box] is for descending steep hills/mountains in France when I select 1 or 2 for braking.
