Hi,  I have a 1.9cdti 150bhp manual zafira.  we are looking to change our van to a Bailey Bretegne with a MTPLM of 1483kg.  Would this be ok for the car.  Also if any one has a any comments on a Adria Altea 542 it would be great.

Thanks Vikki

Hi Vikki

The Bailey would be just legal at 1483 kgs according to the table above, but you would be towing at nearly 100% which is not recommended unless you are an experienced tower.

Cheers

Paul

Dont use whattowcar for vauxhall. They are based on european Opel vehicles.

Thanks everyone.  Maybe change our choice of caravan as it is very close to legal limit.

It is very close to the limit - but still legal.
If you are experienced and competent - it shouldn't be a problem - the Zafira is a very stable car.

We used ours to tow our Sterling Europa 540 Last year and had no problems - just careful loading

We have the exact outfit your are talking about and our V5 states the car Mass in Service as 1613kg so I would question Stressed Al's data.  The handbook states a minimum of 1641kg

We find it a good match and stable.

Remember that the nose weight does not count as towed weight so you will be towing a maximum of 1408kg if you have the nose weight at 75 kg

I towed our Bailey Pageant Loire with our Nissan X-Trail at 106% ...

It towed really well as it had a tow limit of 2000KG ... You only break the law if you exceed the manufactures max tow limit  ,.... Everyone was poo pooing the idea of towing at 106% -      I kept the speed down to 50-55 on motorways and lower in high winds and steep declines ..... Any extra things you have put them in the car not the van to bring your kerbweight up .....

If you've towed a lot before I say 'Go for it' and enjoy

So you towed at 106% perhaps legal  with the x-trail but not advisable , if we all threw caution to the wind when towing how many more vans would be lying on there sides on the M6 or any other motorway . And as for loading up extra gear in your car to bring up the kerbweight what about the max permissable weight your towcar is  allowed or does that not matter ?
