A turbo diesel is certainly better for towing but you need to know what caravan you are getting so you get a car with enough towing weight. A diesel Vectra or Mondeo would probabley be ok but if you want a large caravan a 4x4 would be better.
------------- Sell my camper? I'd rather eat school semolina!
Mondeo Diesel 2.0L great towing vehicle. Got one on a 02 plate, and one on a 08. I do towing as a job. Got through many vans and cars, Mondeo have proved there worth.
Do check towing limits, but look at any German or Japanese car with 2 litre ish diesel engine and you won't go far wrong for towing a single axle van up to 1500kg max.
Especially good are the Mondeo 2.2 diesel and the lesser known Skoda Superb 2.0 diesel. (Part of V.A.G, it is all VW components, so I do class it as German.)
You will notice that I have a Skoda Octavia, so I am relying on my own experience, the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey and Autotrader Survey when I add that you will find Skoda Dealers/Servicing/Customer Service are all usually very good. Rare comodities these days!
Adding a little to what johnjory said the Mondeo diesel ( whichever sized engine ) is especially good as a towcar.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
We are going to replace my Freelander with a Kia Sportage2.0 CRDi XE 5dr at £11.795, the cheapest is at Perrys Preston, we will save £3400 I know its a bit to travel but with that saving its worth it.
