could somebody clear up a point about insurance when towing a caravan,
i understand that your van is not covered by your car insurance for accidental damage etc, also that caravan insurance only covers against theft or damage while not hitched up, any advice would be welcomed regarding cover whilst being towed

Hi Dave.
I am sure your caravan insurance covers you while towing. There would be no point in having it otherwise. More likely to be bashed than stolen I would think. Your car will not be covered while towing unless you tell them you have a towbar and use it for towing. This is most important!!
I have been sorting out Insurance for our new Hyundai Tucson (2004) and one thing I've had to do is declare that it has been modified as it has had a tow bar fitted. It is easy to miss this.
I check each time I change insurers (annually these days!) and they've never been particularly interested, just confirmed that I'm covered for towing. I don't think any of them have ever noted that I've got a towbar - unless they think I tow with a rope between my teeth of course - it's certainly never mentioned on any of the documentation. I also have to declare I've got alloy wheels and they want to know the ins and outs of a duck's bum with those.
How can a towbar be classed as a modification.
Its on every car manufacturers accessories list.
Does this mean that becouse My volvo as the 7 seat option its a modification. Or that satnav was fitted as an option that its a modification.
I have never been asked if it as a towbar & its never said anything in the small print.
If the car was supplied with the extra option by the manufacturer then it is not a modification. If you add anything that is screwed or bolted to the vehicle then it is and this includes engine modification!
If you add a tow bar then you must inform the insurance company. There is no arguement. Have an accident and they may refuse to pay because you did not inform them.

The towbar was fitted by the dealer before you purchased it. So it is just an optional extra.
Not a modification.
Don't agree. Whether it was fitted by the dealer or not, it is still a modification to the original vehicle. The manufacturer of the vehicle would never offer it as an optional extra. The insurance company are the people that matter and they won't know a tow bar is on the vehicle unless you tell them!!!
I agree. Our insurance were fine with factory fitted options, but even the dealer fitted options put on the car before we took delivery had to be noted....and this increased the premium.
we had to declare a towbar, running boards, mud flaps and even front parking sensors!
