All towbars have to have wiring for the trailer electrics. There is the 12N socket (black) which supplies the road lights on the trailer.

If you have a caravan you wil need the 12S socket (grey) which supplies internal power to the caravan for lights, fridge etc.

As above towsure are ok. Some cars have a socket in the rear to enable the wiring to be fitted easily.

ring the main dealer and ask them if your car is bulb conscious
i have a picasso and it is not , but there are so many variations possible on the year as it was time they changed quite a bit of things so check with them then you will know for sure

Are you thinking of a special plug which fits into a ready-made socket on the car?. I suspect that in 2001 they didn't fit these, but I'd just double check with the main dealer.

Hi

and thank you all for all your advice i have been on to the dealers and they have said it is multiplex wiring on this model therefore requiring a 7 way bypass relay although i have called a towbar specialist who the dealer recommended and they have said that they have never needed to put a relay on all the xsaras they have fitted so still do not really know what to do so therefore i will probably get the relay fitted better to be safe i suppose

but once again thank you so much

Anthony
