I am possibly looking to get a new car and have narrored it down to 2 (or 3).  Please can you let me know what you think of the a 52 plate Santa Fe td or a 52 TD4 freelander.  I am really interested in reliability and parts/service cost.  One dissadvantage of the freelander is it looks like it has a small boot and I do tend to take a bit of stuff away as the van is 40 miles from home.

I will be towing a 1300kg tec so no worries with weight.  I have also seen a Jeep Cheokee CRD but think this may be a bit expensive to run.

Cheers

i tow with a freelander great tow car but the boot area is small.if there is only two of you you can always take down the rear seats and gain quite a lot of space.also rear seats split so if there is three of you you can just let part of the seat down.

Our two little girls fill the back seats and most of the boot, a roof box may be an option but we usually take 6 bikes away (5 on roof and 1 on back) and need the roof space aswell, I could look at putting 2 or 3 bikes on the back but the freelander has a rear spare.

Go for the Santa Fe, I have a freelander, I test drove a Santa fe and really liked it (low miles but trashes inside), also the freelander is difficult to hitch up, we had to buy a handle at £36.00 so that the Aklo stabilizer could open fully, now selling Freelander getting Kia Sportage.

Hi we have a freelander we have been campers and now moved to caravan, when we hitched at home no problem but when we came to unhitch other half had to take spare wheel off to release alko we sorted problem before we left just had to loosen jockey wheel so it moved to one side no problem, apperently you can get spacers for tow bar if you read up on freelanders on here but we have no probs now.

If you're concerned about running costs, drop the 4x4 and get a large family car, most will tow 1300kg. Much cheaper to run, and much more choice.

Steve.

Thanks for the advice, I have a frontera at the moment and had the same problems with the alko stabiliser, now I just open the rear door.

I did think about an estate but foyr wheel drive has got me (and fellow campers) out of muddy sites quite a few times that I would prefer to stick with one.

Would love an X-Trail but they are just out of my budget.

Still no closer to a decision, no fans of the Jeep yet then!!!!

Went off a Frontera 3.2 petrol, to a Terracan. No problems at all. Big difference in drive mentality, but once i got into the diesel thing it's been great. Consumption is steady around 28 mpg pulling, not bad for such a heavy vehicle. Only use it for pulling the van, rest of time Ford Fusion 60 mpg, or m/bike.

Fans of the jeep here!! We have a 53 plate cherokee Limited 2.5 diesel. around 28 mpg in normal use drops to around 25 when towing our lunar quasar 525. Not particularly economical I know, but ,up to now reliable an is a good towcar. I like it, it,s got a bit more character than the korean offerings, in my opinion anyway. Try driving the cars you fancy & see which one you prefer, the jeep seems cheap to run to me,(in as far as any 4x4 can be), due as much as anything for the last 3 years & 40,000 miles just needing servicing & no extra repairs. I think you know in your heart you want the jeep, go on get in there & stick some John Cougar Mellencamp & Steve Earle in the cd player, & live the Jeep dream!!

Definitely the santa fe, you get looads of extras as standard like a sunroof and air con, and a big boot, when we got our Hyundai it was a toss up between the santa fe or the Trajet we have, I wanted the santa fe but as its OH she had final say and wanted the 7 Seat option of the Mum bus we have

We have found our Hyundai really reliable and nice to drive, OH informs me it tows the van no probs and didn't seem to struggle when we went to Cornwall last year,.

Santa fe you also don't have to worry about the silly spare wheel being on the back as its underneath.

They also come with roof rails so easy to mount bikes/roofbox etc.

Jeeps are nice, but the boot on the cherokees is tiny unless you go for the grand cherokee.
