my caravan is only 1150 max laden weight

We tow a similar weight caravan with a new model 1.9 (150) diesel and it does it well. If anyone knows the hill outside Leek towards Buxton, we managed that yeserday pretty well but at first when we towed with a scenic we nearly didn't make it in first.

We bought the 150 over the 120 because the torque of the 120 wasn't high enough. This model engine was the only one that would convincingly do the job.

Old shape Zafira 2.0 DTi models with a/c can only tow 1050 kg.  From looking at other posts, the best tower old Zafira is the 2.2 petrol if you can hunt one down.

I agree with the above poster about the Zafira B 1.9 150hp model.  We came back from Wiltshire to Essex at the legal speed limit with a 1480 kg caravan on the back and two adult bikes on the roof of the car, with no problems at all.  I had to use the gears a few times, but it revs freely so it was no hardship.

I tow with a zafira 1.8 125hp manual 2001 model, and in January bought a Elldis firestorm 524 p/xing a Bailey discovery 444, so fully loaded i'm 320kgs heavier than my unit used to be at 1320kgs. The car is great, has enough power to hold 5th gear 90% of the time it just take's a little longer to get there, the van hardly moves behind the car giving a stable ride all the way. We returned from Anglesey at easter and tackled the dreaded Rhuallt hill on the A55 and was proud to say although I dropped to 3rd the car held 40mph nearly all the way up it (its about 1.5-2 miles long and pretty steep).

As others have said the 1.9 150hp diesel is the top model by far but as for your question stay away from the 2.0 dti, it will pull all day long but you can't keep the engine cool. 1.8 125hp good engine with loads of power, I had the ECU replaced on mine and it cost 900 quid and is quite common, be careful.
