I wouldn`t recommend the Passat, and I`m on my third.

55 mpg is dreamland for mine, long runs will nurture 42 if I`m gentle, 36-38 if I`m not.
Towing 1375 kgs gives 23-25mpg, and I have to block off all the bedding box vents to prevent getting soot on the contents. It needed a new engine at 28k, has had countless visits to the dealer to sort out the (rubbish) handbrake, needed new (modified) suspension arms at 18K, a new seat, been recalled for fuel pump issues, and has used 8 litres of (expensive) fully synthetic oil since its last service - and it doesn`t leak.

It does tow remarkably well though

By all means get a Passat if its a previous (B5.5) model - particularly if its a 130TDI Sport - they really are brilliant!

Hi

I have a 04 plate mondeo 64k miles 2.0tdci 115bhp. I tow a coachman at 1060kg, The mondeo is a good tow car and i am returning 33mpg while towing and when not towing i average 54mpg on a run at 60mph. I have also read about all the things that go wrong but you can read about all the things that go wrong with any make of car. People will always be pleased to tell you the bad points, but if they were that bad do you realy think there would be as many on the road, Do you think a taxi driver wants a car that will spends more time in the garage, costing money, than making money out on the road.

In the end it is up to you but my answer to your question is yes the mondeo is a good tow car.
