We have just got a 1.6 zafira to tow our caravan, i checked out what towcar.com and it gave 3 stars out of 5.

The kerbweight of the car varies from website to website, 1300 to 1450.

Can you add the weight of the passengers to the kerb weight of the car, ie me and my family weigh 210kg, can this be added onto the car's kerbweight?

caravan weighs 750kg and allows 150kg for extras, so 900kg in total.

The kerbweight of your car is the weight ready to drive but with no passengers or luggage. The kerbweight will be in you car's handbook. You should only go on what is stated in your car's handbook not rely on internet sites.

The car will be ok & legal to tow your 900kg caravan.

You need also to check the maximum allowed towing wieght of the car and make sure you don't exceed.  For instance some Renaults have a 'kerb' weight and would appear to be a good match but they have a low maximum permitted towing weight.

hiya,Morphe, we had a '57 plate zafira and used to tow an avondale golden mayfair that had an mtplm of 975kg and the zafira is restricted to towing 1000kg by vauxhall even though its quite a big car so even fully loaded you will be well inside the tow safe guidelines. have fun. cheers Bill

I think I may have the e mail somewhere that vauxhall sent explaining it all .

Had a new 55 plate, last of the older model, 1600 petrol and it had a max tow of 110 Kgdue to it being built on a astra chasis. We towed a van of 945/ 1150 KG and it towed perfectly well on the flat but was a little limited on an incline or hill start.

DO NOT use whattowcar for details as they base on the European Opel which is a heavier car.

I would suggest reading your cars handbook for the actual kerb weight.  Most sites list my Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI 150 Estate 57 plate design as 1400KG, but in actual fact the manual says it is 1455KG for the car/engine combo and then 20KG for the design spec. Or something like that, totalling 1475KG rather that 1400KG. Whattowcar has mine as 1450KG which I thought was over until I read the handbook.

What lots of sites don't say is what constitutes kerb weight - some include a driver allowance and also fuel, some do one not the other and some info is just the car with half a tank and no driver - seems all combinations are published somewhere or other.

Morph, we checked our handbook and if you work on the 85% guide line the zafira can tyow 1500kg!!!!! but if you ring tow safe they will tell you to tow no more than 1000kg... I got a bit confused so e mailed vauxhall who told me the same as tow safe. As i said our old van was only 975kg , we had no problems towing as long as we did'nt put too much in the car. We found we were up and down the gears when we went somewhere like the peaks or even going to skegness on some of the winding roads . we worked out we got 26-27 to the gallon which I was quite happy with but we've changed car and caravan now so we could get a van with a fixed bed. much better for us, bigger van and 2.0lt diesol and get approx 35 mpg... very happy. atb Bill
