Hi everyone,

I am interested to here if anyone has used a Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 16v Automatic for towing. I have a Abbey award Nightstar which I currently tow with a Skoda Octavia 1.8 VRS but Ive just bought the Vauxhall for the wifes business so was wondering if its any good for towing. Although the skoda has the power and its an ok match its geared too high so I have alot of clutch slipping to do on takeoff lol

Thanks for reading

facer

P.S The Zafira does have an oil cooler fitted and its a 2002 model

Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 Auto. 1200KG Max tow weight.
Is the van under this weight. The 1.8 are gutless & with auto as well. Its going to give the engine & box a very hard time.

Had an 1.8 auto, o3 plate and it was dreadful to tow with.  Ok on a straight raod but even the slightest incline gave it problems - sorry, maybe someone has a better experience

Best of luck and happy camping x

According to Towcar.com, Zafira Auto 1.8 2000-2005 has kerb weight of 1555kgs

My parents actually have a 54 plate 1.8 auto, and have no problems with it at all. Yes it may drop down to lower gears on the steep stuff, but apart from that they have had no complaints at all. The Zafira being Astra based, has the advantage of being cheap to repair. Rear suspension problems IF you get them are easy to over come as it's a Vauxhall, and most garages have no problem fixing them.

They tow a Bailey 460/2 and as said its fine for them. If you plan on filling the Zafira with kids and clutter then it may well struggle. If i doubt go for the 2.0Dti or a 2.2 petrol, although my personal experience of the Vauxhall 2.2 engine was costly due to failing timing chains!

Hope it helps

The later 1.8's have about 140bhp, they are a great improvement on the previous 1.8 model, I had a 57 plate one while my car was in for warrenty work, couldnt complain about the power output at all, though I do find the zafira a bit unstable at motorway speeds, the steering was a little to sensitve and the car was susceptible to side winds.

For the past three years I've been towing with a zafira 1.9 cdti (120ps) with no problems at all.

Just changed it for an Insignia Sport Tourer (estate). Tow bar fitted next Thursday, off we go the following day.

Hope the new car tows ok. I'm sure it will as it the 2.0 cdti.

Just to let you know I fitted a towbar myself (£74) and tried it out.17 We towed the caravan with a full boot of gear and 2 kids no probs! It was a little sluggish uphill but more than made up for it on the busy town roads and backlanes. A friend who also has an auto told me to put the car in second/third just before I hit the uphills and it did make a noticable difference 17

Thanks to everyone for your replies

Hope your all making the most of the glorious weather 17
