According to Towcar.com, Zafira Auto 1.8 2000-2005 has kerb weight of 1555kgs
My parents actually have a 54 plate 1.8 auto, and have no problems with it at all. Yes it may drop down to lower gears on the steep stuff, but apart from that they have had no complaints at all. The Zafira being Astra based, has the advantage of being cheap to repair. Rear suspension problems IF you get them are easy to over come as it's a Vauxhall, and most garages have no problem fixing them.
They tow a Bailey 460/2 and as said its fine for them. If you plan on filling the Zafira with kids and clutter then it may well struggle. If i doubt go for the 2.0Dti or a 2.2 petrol, although my personal experience of the Vauxhall 2.2 engine was costly due to failing timing chains!
Hope it helps
