With the Sportage at least, the diesel is actually meant to be less fuel efficient than the petrol.

Hehe just a light hearted comment - but can anybody name a big turbo diesel 4wd car that does not drink fuel when towing a large heavy caravan (1 or 2 axle). And if you want to be really scared - what about a big petrol 4wd car? i recon you buy a big van, you tow it with a big car, and you are almost certainly going to get some big fuel bills. Petrol range rover, Porche Cayenne (or whatever), Shogun petrol etc cost a bomb in fuel, and do alot less mpg towing than any diesel car will. But even these 'gas guzzlers' make a drive to the airport and a flight to Europe for a weekend look like carbon emmisions heaven! Like i say - only my opinion - not a green campaign. If you want to save money buy a small van & car. If you want alot of space in your van be prepared for larger fuel bills. And get used to driving a boring 4wd or big heavy diesel people carrier. Light fast sports cars are fun. Good tugs are in comparison slow, heavy and boring to drive. Pay your £££s, take your choice. I would love a 2 seater lightweight super sports Caterham type car, but for my families camping enjoyment i pilot a Kia sorento diesel - dead boring but a great tug!
