Hiya we are new to caravaning and have recently bought a 1992 Eldiss Shamal can any1 suggest a really good towing car or where to get information for complete novices.

We have got a Vauxhall Zafira Gsi at the min and are obviously finding towing with it very expensive and have been told by quite a few people that these cars when towing are likely to blow the turbos.

Any suggestions for a decent towing vehicle?

An idea of price will help people.  For what it's worth I've driven nothing but diesels since 1984 so would say go for a diesel.

Once we sell ours we will have about £6000. We have been looking at all sorts of diesels but the hubby is still looking for the sporty kind of cars we have had in the past lol

Cheers for your comment

Has he driven a modern diesel?  MIne does 0-60 in 9 secs buut the real plus is the torque!  You should get a decent Mondeo or Vectra for that.  My son just had a look at a Vectra Estate diesel SRI 150 BHP 57 reg £6750 but it had done 55k.

You may find a decent Beemer 320d if you search the net.

46mpg towing???? is it a caravan? I have the same engine in my V50 and get around 30mpg towing and 45mpg solo, my old laguna dci was 33mpg, my old passat 1.9tdi 34mpg.

Anyway tell him to aim for a diesel with 130+bhp I think he will be surprised!!!! I would pick any hatch/estate that you like in the family car catagory, then ask on here what they are like!!

My dad pulls his Eldiss Shamal of similar age with a 100bhp vectra estate with no problems at all and he gets 54mpg solo!!

Everyone seems to forget something when they start unpacking, If they got that mpg towing i think they may find they forgot the caravan.
