Hiya folks, I was wondering if anyone would care to help.

I have been left a caravan in a will, and it's in good condition.

Anyway, Im needing a little help with a few things.

Its a swift challenger 490/5L 1991.

I have never towed before and was looking for tips.

I took it into an empty industrial estate for a practice, but I only drive a Vauxhall Astra 1.6, although it did ok and sat fine with the car, it struggled a bit with power.

First of all, what size of car do you reckon I should get, as Im going to trade my Astra in.

Can anyone tell me what the weight of my caravan is and it's lenth, done a search but im not really sure where to look.

Also, any other advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Have a look here
I put in one of the 2 choices for your Swift and a 1.6 Astra which may or may not be yours and it says the Swift is 50kg too heavy for your car. Try the tow match with the exact car model and try again, but it looks as if you may need a bigger car.

Good luck.

If it was me I would try a deisel around a 2Ltr.  Plenty of power and torque for pulling.  you will also want a heavy car to take control of the van and prevent snaking.

Plenty of cars around for towing. If you give us a shortlist of cars you like, then we can let you know what is the best to tow with.

That's a good idea.

I have my eye on a range rover/land rovers just now, or maybe a big saloon car.

You should have no problem towing with either a Range Rover or a Land Rover although some people have found some of the Discoveries a bit unstable, but the same people have had no problem with other Discoveries. It is thought that it has something to do with the self levelling suspension, but as far as I recall, no one ever found anything physically wrong with any of the affected Discoveries and ended up changeing cars. Hopefully someone with more Discovery experience can help clear this up should you decide to go for one of those. As far as large saloons go, there are plenty to choose from.

Hi Steve the tucson crtd has a towing weight of around 1400 kg so they should do the job for you nice and safe.

I'm new too and collect my caravan on weekend. I have a Vauzhall Vectra 2.0 DTI 04 plate. Are these cars any good for towing?
