have been looking at these for a while,i see there are 3 diesels 1.6 110 hp,1.8 115 hp,and a 2.0 130 hp. does anyone have a 1.6?are they reliable?i will only be pulling about 1000kg,so thought the 1.6 would suffice.Or would getting the bigger engines be a better option.I have heard a lot about the 2 litre engine being a bad one, blowing turbos etc.
is the 1.8 worth looking at as it only has 5hp more than 1.6?
which one would you go for? they all seem to be good on fuel
is there plenty of room in them, rear leg, boot?
I would be looking at between 02-06 reg
any other to consider, touran looks nice, but costs lot more
Touran may be dearer but which will be worth more after a couple more years? IMO the Volkswagen. My son has a C-Max 2.0 petrol auto which is comfortable and roomy but I personally think the plastics inside are very cheap looking and they don't feel very substantial compared to his previous car which was a Golf. He swapped because they now have a baby and all that comes with her.
More likely to blow the turbo on a 1.6 compared to the 2L diesel, It will be under more strain when towing.
Buying an older one check if it has had a new clutch, £1000 for a new clutch and flywheel, Sometimes a new starter motor is needed as well. The flywheels breakdown & damages the starter motor.
Got the 1.6 110 diesel in my new shape Berlingo, which is same engine as in the Ford. Goes well enough, pulls my 800kg Eriba like it aint there. But obviously the bigger engine will have more torque(ie more pulling power)
Thrashing a diesel wont 'blow' the turbo, it spins at the same speed whatever the engine size, premature turbo failure is often caused by excessive exhaust gas temperatures due to faliure of EGR valve or using wrong spec oil, fully synth oil is normally specified for modern diesels.
Had a 1.8 petrol Focus. Towed well, 2 berth caravan. A bit underpowered on hills, but otherwise, excellent car. Now have 2. lt 130 Dti turbo mondeo. Better economy, but Ford have got this one right, too. Still the 2 berthm but the 2.0 deisel turbo is noticably more powerful. Its a bit of a rarity to get a 2.0lt deisel Focus, but if I could have found a recent used model, I would have gone for that.
We have a Ford Focus C-Max 2.0 130 hp 55 reg & will be towing a 5 berth Adria with it. So far we've had no problems but we've only had it on straight road for a short time whilst we were cleaning it.
We are going away in it tomorrow for our first weekend & don't expect to have any problems. If we were going for a new car we would look at the 1.8.
The only issue that we have with the car is that it has an electronic hand brake...... NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!
We are the second owners of the car (bought it when it was 3 mths old at very good price) and I suspect the previous owner added the electric handbrake as a fancy & then realise that its not great for hill starts, especially when towing a caravan! We had a couple of hairy experiences when towing a 2 berth swift challanger so not looking forward to towing the Adria for that one reason. This may force a change of car towards the end of the year.
------------- You can take the girl oota Scotland, but you cannie take Scotland oota the girl!
A mate of mine has the 2.0 130bhp C-Max (05 Reg I think) and he raves about it - tows his new Bailey Pageant 4 berth and he reckons it accelerates up hills in 5th no problem !
Its definately a car full of surprises! People have said to us before that they didn't think it looked heavy enough to tow but whenever we've towed using it, from Yorkshire to North Berwick, Edinburgh mostly its always towed like a dream & copes with hills brilliantly. I'd be hard pushed to go past the C-Max.

We have the 1.8 TDCI. It pulls our elddis very well, and is good on fuel. We averaged 38mpg going to cornwall in may. One word of advice, if you are towing in hilly country turn the traction control OFF. If you stop on a good gradient for any reason you will struggle to get going again if its turned on. the wheels will try to spin but then it cuts the power and the bloody thing will stall. Switch it off before you start out and it will go anywhere.
