We have recently purchased a new car. We have now also decided to get rid of my of my old car which has the towbar and single electrics for our camping trailer.

As my husband fitted the last tow bar he is confident he can do it on our new car too.

Last time I orderd our Westfalia towbar from Towequipe. They were fab, very helpful etc etc but they do not seem to have any towbars suitable for a 2009 Xsara Picasso.

I have found a Witter towbar  with this company http://www.pfjones.co.uk/tow-bars.html?gclid=CMLuxb_IopsCFWIB4wodHVcyDQ and its at a very good price too.

Has anyone used this comapny before. Are they as helpful as they say they are if you encounter problems with fitting.  Hubby is confident he can fit with no probs and with his leccy background is adament I dont need to buy the new electrics kit as he will used the old one from the old tow bar. All dutch to me! LOL

Anyhow, just would like to know if anyone has any feedback on this comapny as I have never heard of them before.

Also (i have asked in equipment but will ask here). I have the choice of a Flange or Swan.  Any advantages or disadvantages of either? (has a Swan on our old car) Not botherd or interested in a detatchable, I just dont have the spare cash for one this side of our holidays.  Just to add this is for towing a trailer and NOT a caravan.

Many thanks

Don't know this company I'm afraid, but I would try to persuade hubby to go for the car specific electrics kit.  A brand new car like yours is sure to have a pre-wired socket in the rear, designed to plug the towbar electrics in to.  It keeps all of the bulb failure sensing system working properly and also provides the heavy duty 12Vdc supply for battery charging and fridge if you fit the 12S socket on your towbar as well  ( Well, my Zafira did anyway!)

Much easier to use and more reliable than the dreaded skotch lock connectors.

If fitting a tow bar on a brand new car does it invalidate the car warranty if not fitted by the manuf. or garage?

agree fitting yourself may invalidate your warranty if you made a claim so ask first before you do and get it in writing.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

I would definately go for the correct wiring harness. Trying to scotchlock the wires into the loom if it has a CAN BUS can cause very expensive damage that won't be covered under the warranty. I've always wired my own but I always had older cars without computerised lights and goodness knows what else.

Your Citroen main dealer should charge around £400 for a Citroen supplied & fitted swan neck towbar & 13pin(ie new type twin)electrics so for single electrics which is all you want it should be less.

If he is determined to diy he needs to use Citroen supplied plug in electrics or he may invalidate the car's warranty which(if you read the handbook)forbids the fitting of non approved electrical accessories. You cannot usually scotchlock electrics on modern cars, power for both rear & brake lights can run thru 1 cable for instance. Although the Xsara Piccasso has been in production for a lot of yrs so its possible you can get away without dedicated wiring.

I would check with your Citroen dealer before doing anything, as they may require towbar fitting only by themselves or by a fitter approved by them otherwise they may invalidate your warranty.

I'd go for swan neck purely on grounds of appearance, I think they look much neater but its a matter of opinion of course..

Thanks for the replies.

DOH!! I hadn't thought of the warranty!  Dammit! That throws a BIG BIG spanner in the works. £400 against £89 is alot of difference! I will check with our citroen dealer but just know they will want us to spend more money with them! LOL

I suspected problems and issues with the electrics so theres no surprise there TBH! Nice to get some sensible opinions - hubby is not a big camping fan and is thrifty at the best of times but damn right tight when it comes to camping kit and essentials!  LOL. Camping is the only reason I need a towbar!

He is not going to be a happy hubby when I tell him this.

Plan B - which involves a smaller tent and a new roof .bars instead may be the route I need to go down now!

Thanks again

i lease my car and the leasing company said they are happy that I fit a towbar myself...they told me it wont affect warrenty as long as it was car specific

I would try to get the car specific wiring loom as this is literaly plug and play....fitted my wiring in 2 minutes as it just plugs in and needs strapping up!

have you looked on ebay...sometimes you can get lucky.

have you called towequipe...i guess its difficult to keep up to date with new models, but I am sure they will get you one. I have used them a couple of time now.

We have just bought a new vauxhall and have same problem. We asked how much for them to put a tow bar on and they wanted £550! This was just so we could put a bike rack on the tow bar...we are now going to squeeze the bike in the roof box as with the cost of the bike rack this is an expensive option especially since I know an independent fitter will do it for a lot less. We are also looking at buying a smaller tent - still a lot less than getting Vauxhall to fit a tow bar on.

I cannot see a proprietary towbar and wiring harness invalidating the warranty. Even if it did, he could take it all off before returning to the dealer for a warranty claim. I beleive towsure do vehicle specific wiring harnesses. I always found them very cheap for towbars too.

ive just been through the same with citroen, ive ended up having a tow bar and dedicated wiring kit fitted from an independant firm,

ive just bought a c4 grand picasso and citroen stated that the warranty will not be affected aslong as its done by a vat registered firm and the dedicated wiring kit is used

the wiring kit is a must as it has a cam system and one wire will do different functions also when i plug the caravan in the car knows it is towing and alters the esp program and deactivates the rear fog lights, if you splice into the wires it may cause gremlins in the electrics!!!
also once fitted on myne it had to be activated by citroen,
but once you paid a decent amount for a new car with waranty on another £490 is nothing for piece of mind that it dosnt effect the warranty

raccy!

Hi

I have had two Citroens and have always bought genuine tow bars and electrics from local dealer.  They have cost the same as a Brink.

All the parts are in the kit and the electrics have plugged into the wiring loom.

You know it makes sense.

Regards
