Got the old noise problem on my winterhoff hitch going away wednesday and cant find the advice of solving the problem.  If I remember was it a light sand paper on the hitch and clean with white spirit.  Any advise please.  Defo the hitch by the way nosie goes if I put hitch into unlocked position.

Ben

I use the AKG hitch, but the principle is the same between both manufacturers.

As the hitch grips the ball, any trace of contamination on the ball or friction pads will cause noise in transit etc. Make sure the entire ball surface is clean of paint, grit, odd rust spots etc., by rubbing with some fine sand-paper or wet-n-dry (not wet though). Then a wipe over with a clean cloth with white spirit on, plus a good wipe over the friction pads too (also with white spirit) and you'll be sorted.
Some folks use brake cleaner; certain brands can contain oils so avoid. Other alternative is isopropyl alcohol, very cheap from chemists and works a treat too.

You never know when a bit of grit might kick up into the hitch, so I keep a small kit of the above in the van too.
