Unless you change your Astra for someting bigger I would forget caravans and buy a hard top trailer tent. There are lots around Conway Cruser or Pennie or if you want something well built but older go for a Bonair. But remeber the golden rule do not agree to buy until you have inspected it especially on Ebay.
Conway Cruiser & all Pennines are not hard top, they are canvas top. The only British made hard top folding campers were Conway Cardinals and their predecessors, Tardis. I used to have a Cardinal - they are very heavy - I've owned 4 caravans that have been lighter. The US made ones like the Bonair were even heavier.
Believe me, the Pennine Pathfinder and Conway Crusader are heavy little blighters too. Our Pathfinder, gross, is bang on the towing limit for our Rover 45 set by the driver's handbook. Shame, as it feels like it could pull a heavier unit. Then again, with the aerodynamic drag of a 'van, maybe 1000kg is enough. We know that the camper is on the back when we are pulling away, but once on the move, it is fine. Hills? Just ensure the revs are just over 2k(60mph) and open it up and is whizzes up and if I don't watch out, crests the hills at **mph. We'd still like a 'van eventually though and will be looking to get a nice Audi/VW/Volvo etc with a punchy TD lump.
Pete
PS how about those nice little lightwieght Going UK Go series? Weight well within our limit for the 3-4 berth 350. Even the 2 berth 300 would be OK but I can't tell from the blurb if it has a water heater (it has a shower but no thanks if it is cold!!!!)
