Look on teletext before you set out, it shows problem areas on all motorways.

Use Google maps to plan your route, it now gives traffic information.

Your biggest problem will be any one off accidents that are rife on this route.

Depepnding on the time of day, That M42/M1 junction can get very busy, Again the M42 to M6 stretch and sevral places on the M5, Worcester, Bristol, Weston, In fact the whole Bristol to Taunton stretch can be very very slow.

One year it took my mate almost 10 hours to travel from Jct 1/M5 to Perranporth. That was in a van and not towing national limits where allowed & 70 on the motorway.

there are roadworks at tewkesbury and there were some at taunton the other day not causing major problem but could do, bristol to weston is normally bad around the school holidays and as schools start breaking up may cause problems.

If your not past Bristol before 7:30am..ish it will be heavy avoid the busy times, early mornings & lunchtimes. I always find it better to be parked up having a snack at lunchtimes. Too many people popping out shopping & rushing around to get back to work.

We used to set off from near Preston around 3.30am on a Saturday and get there around 3pm!!! hellish busy on an August Sat, don't underestimate the amount of holiday makers on the move!! Don't plan on eating at a services, queues everywhere, take your own or find a tesco, asda etc. You will be surprised at how many kids are watching DVD's in the car on the M6 is at 4am!!!

Thanks for all the replies to my question.

I am a seasoned traveller on this route and understand the problems that can arise on the journey down, that is why over the years we now travel on a Thursday and time it so we can hope to miss the main traffic congestion around Birmingham and Bristol.

Thanks for the nod of possible roadworks around Tewkesbury and Taunton.

My answer to clanjones, Set of as early in the morning as you can. In 2 weeks time the bottom end of the M5 and the A30 become a nightmare around 7&8am. Take note of what SPROZ says, they use some of your route. My only advise would be, make it earlier than 3.30 !!!

As you can see we travel down alot but tend not to go during the summer holidays now. Travelling on a sturday is a nightmare and the earlier you leave the better. We used to leave Birmingham at about 3.30am and travel to Taunton Deane Services for a short break and then travel on down and stop anywhere past Newquay for a few hours kip. That way we would generally be in Cornwall at about 7.00am and then sleep the journey off for a few hour to travel on to our site for about 11.00am.

I realise I've missed you but this is a useful website, you can view the cameras on all motorways. Change to Scotland in address for scottish cameras. We live close to a log jam area of the M5 & use this site before leaving home.
