can anyone help me. i have been told that if i insert some rubber bushes into the rear springs of my 56 plate mondeo estate it would be just as good as double springing. i can find the springs but not the bushes. does anyone no where i can get them from and if they would really help with the towing. p.s if ya thinking about towing with a mondeo please think again unless ya have a deep pocket and can afford a new clutch and flywheel every 20k £1000 repair at ford for this job.

123756 miles on ours 2002 mondeo, 4 years of hard driving/towing cost us a  grand total of £400 in repairs.best car we`ve ever owned by some distance and is now my daily commuter car and still averaging way over 50mpg on the run to work

it will cost money if you use Ford dealers !!! or Fraud dealers , or Ford stealers !!  whatever you want to call them17

Mine did 152k on the original clutch and flywheel and even then it was the concentric slave cylinder that failed so everything else was replaced anyway. Clutches and DM Flywheels in particular need to be looked after and not abused, eg the flywheel does not like the engine labouring in higher gears when a lower gear will do. Mondeos are no worse than any other moder car in this respect.

You are wasting your time with spring assisters. I tried them on mine  5 years ago then opted for HD springs instead. They give standard ride height and feel much better even when not towing. The Mondeo estate 'is' noted for soft rear suspension. I think mine is a fabulous car.

to be honest most modern diesel common rail engines have flywheel trouble, I know nothing about cars but read plenty of reports about them. Now to say you need a new clutch flywheel every 20K miles is rubbish. There are reports of flywheels going at as low as 40K miles and as high as 140K miles. Mine did 85K miles and repair was £550, dear enough but it came with  20K mile guarantee or 2 years, so going by what you say I will never need to pay for a new clutch again as it will not last the length of the warranty.
The amount of mondeos you see towing when you are at a campsite speaks for its self, I think they must be the most common towcar on the road, and the reason is simple, It will tow most family sized caravans with ease, will hold all your luggage and sit 5 people in comfort. You get 30mpg towing and 50+ when not, so there you have it a good general all round car, and with a 3 year old car costing less than half it new on the road price, how can you complain
I knew a guy who tried the rubber spring assistirs he wasnt very happy with them. You can buy replacement springs and dampers, there is a link on one of the forums and although expensive I would think they will perform better.

We had MAD spring assistors fitted to both of our Mondeos and they improved things no end.  Only ever had one clutch replacement too.

You can get Greyston or similar spring assisters from Halfords etc

The Mads are very good as well

I have used them on several cars but not a Mondeo

Don't have spring assistors on mine but is the hatchback though. Its a fantastic towcar, the only trouble I have had is at around 30k I had to have new injectors at a cost of £940.00. It was however suspected that the car had previously been run on dodgy fuel by the previous owner but I am told that the injectors are of a very poor design on the mondeo and this is apparently common. My dad is on his 3rd Mondeo now and never had a single bit of trouble with any of them.

You no longer have to fit a duel mass flywheel and clutch you can now get the old single system for your mondeo and at a quarter of the price and it lasts much longer and if the clutch does go all you change is the clutch plate

Quarter of the price? A DMF is £200 - £250 a SMF is not much cheaper.

Also there have been issues with people who have fitted the SMF kits to mondeo's.
Clutches slipping within a short time span and people complaining of vibration and other issues.

No reason why you should not get 100,000 miles plus out of a DMF.

The rubber rings only stop the springs from fully compressing. Not the same as double springing.

When i got my DMF replaced i asked obout the solid one and was advised against it. I was also told by another garage that it is usualy taxis that get the solid fly wheel fitted because they are hard on clutches. You should get at least 70K miles as long as the car is driven normaly and not driven by a boy racer.

Hi, a mate of mine towes with a Mondeo and swears by the rubber spring assisters.

http://www.springassisters.co.uk/Rubber%20Ass%20Page.htm

Just hardens the rear up a bit when towing.

As above, he really rates this car as a tow car.
