I am in need of replacing my disco that was kindly written off by some idiot in a milk tanker. Disco 3 prices are ridiculous at the moment & i cannot buy a replacement with the same spec under 20k. Anyway I have just test drove a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland which is fully loaded, you name it this vehicle has it including reversing camera & rear DVD (Kids will be happy)

Anyone have one of these which they use for everyday use as well as towing? I would like to know if there are any reliability issues, whats the service & running cost like? MPG whilst towing? Any advice good or bad will be greatly appreciated.

we got the limited version (2007) from new. I hated the seats in the overland.

been trouble free so far and I love it. It will tow anything no probs. We upgraded from a normal Cherry.

The gearbox is smooth and always in the right gear.

Packs a punch and usualy first off the lights.

I have heard that the odd car can have electical problems that cannot be solved, but no idea what this is.

sorry no idea on servicing as i have service contract on the car, so i dont see the bill. But I woudl guess a service is £300+ and the tyres seem to be lasting better than I had on the previous cherry.

We currently have a 56 plate 3.0 CRD Limited which is a great towcar and good to live with day to day. Our van has an MTPLM of 1900kg and presents no problem to the Jeep

Towing we get 17 - 20 mpg and on the daily commute of 28 miles to and from work involving B roads, motorway and stop start traffic I generally achieve around 27 mpg. Not as good some rivals but to me the performance compared to say a 3.2  Shogan compensates. Servicing costs are also quite high at £400 -£500 depending on the dealer for the annual service.

We have the satnav with 6 disc cd changer and whilst the multi - play is great I find the satnav a pain and use out TomTom instead.

In the past 2 + years of ownership the only trouble I have had was a failed alternator last week which was replaced under warranty and the I have to say the warranty company (Mondial) were great.

This is my second Jeep and the only criticisms are that I wish they had used a better quality plastic or less of it on the interior, and that depreciation is eye-watering so make sure the price reflects this.

I am thinking of changing before the end of the year and would have no hesitation taking another Grand Cherokee, however the local dealer we bought from has now dropped Jeep from their franchise. Something I have noticed is happening quite often with Jeep and with combined Mercedes/Jeep Dealers. For this reason I am going to have another look at the Shogan so I would also check distance to other dealers if your nearest closes. In Scarborough last week I noticed the dealerships in Scarborough and Pickering had closed and the Hadfields in York had dropped the franchise leaving alternatives in Hull or Bedale 45 & 55 miles away.

From memory I seem to recall there being a Jeep dealership on the road from Windermere to Kendal?

Sure you will enjoy it if you decide to proceed.

There certainly is a dealer on the Windermere road, we bought our Overland there, and have had no problems whatsoever in 3 years, apart from a heater relay, which meant the internal blowers didn't work.  Fixed in 10 minutes under warranty.

Not the most economical, but we looked at the Discovery and Mercedes equivalents, and we were quite shocked when driving them.  Compared with the Jeep, they are really very docile.  The extra power is well worth it.

I bought one just under 2 years old for £12500 (I think!) & 18000 miles .... get it serviced by the guy in the village ... changes oil and filters, checks everything ... cost = peanuts.

Don't buy new at £30k ... the depreciation will turn you suicidal !!!!

Just back from 2 weeks in Switzerland .... something just over 20 mpg ... off to SoF end of August ... best towcar on the market !!

Thanks for all the comments. The vehicle is at the dealer between Kendal & Windermere, they are offering me a deal i would be stupid to refuse if happy with the vehicle. Off for a second test drive tomorrow with the family.
