Hi folks. I have seen a Santa Fe 53 (04) plate with 42000 miles in a local garage. It is a 2.0l Diesel, two previous owners (1 of them an elderly gentleman who only had it for 2 years and travelled 2000 miles)and it has not had a towbar fitted so its never been used for towing. Its in immaculate condition with full service history. We are having a test drive on Monday and hope to buy it.
I have read the previous threads on this car and now I am a wee bit concerned that there could be clutch problems in the future. This is obviously a worry for me.
Does anyone have this car that could advise me on this matter? Thanks.
Friend has just had a £1,000 bill on hers, water pump went and it was nearing a cambelt change apparently so she had that done whilst it was all in pieces.
we have the santa f'e 2004 2.7 v6 auto and love it,found the cost of service high but the 5 year warranty first class.just reached the 5 years on mine and a cam belt change.insure if you buy that the cam belt HAS BEEN DONE.SHOULD BE DONEAT 40k and get proof.and its expensive to do a four hour job.see what warranty you can get with it.seen a hell of a lot of cars broke down this summer but none were santa fe.they are only as good as you look after them.ask if there is any warranty on the clutch as you have heard bad reports and see what they say.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Thanks folks. I have been trying to contact the dealer this morning but no luck so far as the phones ringing out. I will ask the question about the timing belt. When we first viewed the car, the salesman told us it was a timing chain and not a belt so thanks Michael & Ali for bringing it to my attention. I have phoned around to get a quote for the timing belt and it was confirmed that it should have been changed at 40,000. It would cost between £350-£375. That coupled with fitting a tow bar would be too much money to pay so if its not changed we're gonna leave the car. I am glad I posted this thread!!!

What are you comparing it with?
I had a Range Rover for a day recently and would have to say it was the worst ever, felt like I was rolling about in a boat.
I drive various things, primarily a new shape Ford Galaxy for big miles at work (100k in 21 months)
I compare it to Discovery 3, RR sport , Nissan Pathfinder and Ford ranger thunder
I just hated it with a passion.!
It is all down to personal preference , and i know my mileage is quite high but after a 650 mile day in it i could hardly walk!( where as the Galaxy is so comfy!)
I did my homework yesterday afternoon and called 3 Hyundia service centres. They have all assured me that the cam belt needs changed at 70,000 or 7 years. I also asked them about the clutch problems that I have read about. As the car is a 53/04 and it was first registered in Feb 04, it should be ok. They said it was just like any other used car and things can always go wrong but they had no incidence of major problems with this particular model. We went for a test drive and it drives fine. We bought it. We have a months warranty with it and after that might just change the cam belt soon afterwards just for peace of mind. A local mechanic will fit it for £80 and the belt is around £40. We get the towbar fitted on Friday!!
I've got a 54 plate diesel santa fe which I've had for just over 3 years. It's been very reliable and I've found it to be an excellent (best I've had) tow car. I tow a 2005 Bailey Pageant Vendee.
I had a 70,000 mile service this year cost me £650 it did include a cam belt and new pads.
Previous tow cars included a Rover 75 and a BMW 328.
Thanks for that re-assurance. We got the car on Saturday but noticed an intermittant rumble in the front right hand brake so the dealership have it it the moment to repair it, but overall, I think it is going to be an excellent car to tow the caravan!
