they do tend to creak when turning corners if the friction plates have glazed over, you can strip them down and rough up the pads with emery cloth or even sandpaper, then re-assemble and tighten the clamp bolt to the correct torque, this should help the creaking noise.
They can be hard to move, usually you end up on your knees and giving it a good shove, the harder it is the better it will stabilise the van!
