purchased used bulldog stablelizer and conected it up .on first trying it out it made terrable  noise as i turned corrners ect no noise going straight.as i have no instructions and dont know the last time it was used. i think either the mount it sits on is to high or it needs a overhall.It was very hard to lift and place in mount. and really a struggle to lock it in place i am sure it should not be that hard to do .used one years ago but cannot remember if it was as difficult to place and lock on mount.

they do tend to creak when turning corners if the friction plates have glazed over, you can strip them down and rough up the pads with emery cloth or even sandpaper, then re-assemble and tighten the clamp bolt to the correct torque, this should help the creaking noise.

They can be hard to move, usually you end up on your knees and giving it a good shove, the harder it is the better it will stabilise the van!

Mine is just a couple of months old from new (Bulldog200) and that creaks when we turn corners, it is a little tight to get on, but you may be right in thinking this could be because the bracket is mounted too high on the van. Ours has about 4 setting options on the van plate, maybe trying one lower would ease the problem for you. if in doubt your local dealer should be able to check it for you for free, although might charge for any alteration if you didnt buy the van from him.
