Hi everyone, have been looking into renewal for our breakdown cover and have noticed that if your car is over 10 years old, then AA and RAC, etc wont cover it for breakdowns. Does anyone know who will cover our car (plus caravan!)?
Mayday (Greenflag) via the Caravan Club or the RAC if you join through the Camping and Caravanning Club. My experience of the RAC is not good, but I have never used them through the club. I cannot fault Mayday and have been a member for several years after bombing the RAC due to poor service and Mayday being cheaper for better cover. You will find the majority here will recommend Mayday.
All this is very interesting. We are covered with AA with one of those "you are covered whatever car you are in" policies, self and OH each have a card. Besides owning the Rover 45 and the OH's Sportka, we also have a replica 1929 Ford Model 'A' Roadster (actually a kit car, built by the original owner and registered in 1990) A couple of years ago, before I embarked on a massive mechanical and electrical restoration, I was on the way down to LHR to work and coming off the M4 at Jct 5, a misfire started which turned into a worrying electrical short circuit in the steering column harness. I limped into the BP garage at Colnbrook, quickly disconnected the battery and called the AA who came out and provided me with a replacement 30amp fuse and some tape for a quick fix. The question of the age of the car was not raised, so is this "nothing over 10 years old" something new?

I must say I was a bit confused myself - it was only on reading the small print and I believe it is also in small print on one of the AA ads on t.v. that I discovered this. Just wary of ending up with a breakdown that they wouldn't cover.
Just wondered, Legsdownkettleon (love that name!) whether you have a car older than 10 years and if things are different through CC?
My car is over 10 years old and never had a problem with Mayday.
Nor did I have a problem with RAC with regard to the age. They wouldn't recover me with a trailer once and when they did come out on another occasion the fitter was useless and didn't have a suitable vehicle to recover me. I ended up having to call a breakdown company to recover the vehicle and paying for it.
Greenflag ask the sensible questions when you call like do you have an automatic, are you towing. RAC send a man with a set of jump leads and a rope. Neither were much good with a faulty injection system. (turned out to be a hose dropped off, t 5 second repair.)
It's news to me. My OH has been an AA member for 10 years and it covers him whatever car he's in. We had to call them out last year when we broke down in our 16-year old people carrier, and they brought us back home with no problem at all.

Are you confusing this with overseas break down cover? I'm sure that the AA impose a tenyear rule for cars travelling out of the UK and offer a case by case premium for vehicles older than this. This may be up to 15 years old?
We tow with a 20 year old Land Rover and have never had any issue with the AA coming to sort out any problems.
The one issue we do have is the conflicting information about whether they would recover our caravan as it is a gnats whisker under 8m in length and a twin axle taboot.
I have a recollection of there being some kind of premium for older cars on breakdown policies years ago, but it's not something I have come across for a long long time. I would definately join through one of the clubs though and would recommend the CC Mayday over C+CC RAC. They do look after club members much better than regular members and it is usually a bit cheaper.
That's a bit sneaky. After all car's are being made to last longer and longer nowadays. I've got an S reg Fiesta which just keeps going and going. Never costs a lot to get through the MOT and keeps starting. We went away for 2 weeks and it still started when we got home. We did consider getting the £2000 scrappage on dh's new car but decided not to when she is so reliable. I'm covered with the RAC on my car insurance but when it comes to renewing will ask about this.
The AA membership I have is personal breakdown cover. This covers me in whatever vehicle I am traveling in, even as a passenger, I believe. They do also have specific vehicle breakdown cover and there are conditions attached. They ask is your vehicle is over 10 years old if you go down that route.
I have used the AA for a few years now as they have proved better than the RAC and what was then Greenflag. They wanted to charge me extra for taking the car to a garage for repair even though I was covered. I threatened them with a solicitor and asked for copies of the phone conversations as well. They soon said sorry and I heard nothing more of it!
With the AA membership I have, I am covered for the recovery of the car and the caravan as long as it is hitched up. I only checked this last week before I collected the van.
vehicle specific seems to be nearly always age related, I have had both AA and RAC with 12 and 15year old cars in the past.
the AA do have a max call out policy, 4 callouts a year, then they charge, I only found this out after the 3rd callout in a year, they sent me a letter, IIRC callouts were £80 after that.
TBH, I was getting sick of calling them out!!
Andy, you're right about the AA being personal membership, but for overseas travel ie the AA 5 Star cover, the age of the vehicle is a major consideration. I suppose that it's all to do with repatriation costs should the worst come to the worst. Even then I'm sure that in the small print there will be a clause that states that they will only re-imburse repatriation costs if these costs do not exceed the value of the vehicle. Not much good if your car is only worth £1000, but the policy could be worthwhile for peace of mind for minor mechanical issues and getting you to your detsination and/or local garage.
Again, as far as recovering caravans are concerned, there may be issues with caravans of or above certain lengths and, the recovery is apparently at the discretion of the patrolman who makes the decision whether it is safe or he/she is competent enough to recover such a combination.
With an organisation such as the AA, one would hope that in 99.9% of cases the recovery of any caravan would not pose a problem.
I'm with the AA for personal cover, any car etc. even have breakdown insurance, which is where they pay for repair costs (they offered it a month in for £35 a year, would of been £25 but premium for 10 year old car!!)
I phoned them before my first trip early this year to make sure i was covered towing the caravan and they said its fully covered and if i breakdown and they cant repair they would transport the caravan as well, then arrange for the car to be repaired if its covered by the insurance. < They are fully aware my car is 10 years old.
I admit i never mentioned Europe cover, as I wouldn't even think about it in a 10 year old car towing.....worries me enough in the UK.
