Maybe!

If it's got "canbus" wiring or "Check Control" you'll definitely need one and even if it doesn't it's the easiest way to power the relays for the caravan road lights.

The good news is that all Vauxhalls have a 9-pin plug hidden behind the rear trim (it's used when Opel fit towing equipment for the German market where it's usual for factory fit, rather than after-market fit as in the UK). This wiring provides the usual 7 in the 12N, plus reversing lights and a red 20amp power supply to operate the relay itself. The red supply circuit won't be live until you add a 20a fuse to the relevant position on the fuseboard. Just use that group of wires, with the plug cut-off to wire up the by-pass relay.

That was my point. I think that you will get a better answer from a Vauxhall electrician than you will on here. Unless there happens to be a Vauxhall electrician reading this.

Having said that, RogerL's post makes sense. I'd still want to check it with the workshop manuals though.

I don`t have one on my 2002 Vectra 2.0 DTi "B" it does not need one, I do have a Volton Combi which is for leisure battery charging and for van fridge but only when the engine is running while driving and not when ticking over

Thanks for the replies all. Vectralot, did you wire the tow bar yourself then as you know you dont have a relay? I was told I would most likely need one as the console display's bulb faults? would be great news if I dont need one!

You need a warning device to tell you that the trailer indicators are working -or- that they're not working, like recent VWs. The device can be visual or audible - if you want visual you don't have to use the instrument panel space, a simple warning bulb fitted in the lower facia will suffice. The audible can be fitted at the rear of the car where you make the connections to the loom.

I used a 7-way bypass from Towsure - it includes a built-in buzzer.

I have a warning bleeper in the boot, my display does not have a bulb (meaning car illumination bulbs) failure display. Have a look on www.vvoc.co.uk it`s the Vectra owners club, there are sections on there regarding this subject, you will probably find an answer there
