We are picking our van up in the next couple of weeks and can't wait :o) but as yet we haven't purchased any security devices. We want to get a wheel lock and a hitch lock (its an alko hitch).

We have not used any before so any recommendations would be great.

Are some devices insurance approved or doesn't it make a difference as long as you have got one? If it does we would need it to be insurance approved.

Also would you recommend getting one second hand or are you best getting new?

Might be worth asking your insurance company what their anti theft requirements are.

Ours insisted on two as our van is parked outside our house.
We have a hitch lock, a wheel lock and a corner steady lock.
They are all "insurance approved" and we have photographed them fitted just in case!

I have put padlocks on the wind down legs. You can't fit the winder in to wind up or down when they are padlocked. also I put a padlock through the tow hitch. (so much hasstle to cut through 5 padlocks).

As advised already, I'd consult your insurers to find out what security they require you to fit. We have our van hitched to a large RSJ concreted in the flower border. It has an al-Ko hitch lock & an Al-Ko wheel loch as well as two leg locks on the rear stabilisers. As it's itched to a post set in well over 6 cwt of concrete, I also remove the jockey wheel & handle & store it away from the van.

I like the idea of padlocking the stabilisers mentioned by Ianwrexham, I'll see I can get them on the front legs on mine.

No matter what you do if a well trained thief wants your van they will come armed with the right tools to take it.

The main thing is to prove you have taken sufficient means to slow them down!

Hence a phone call to the insurance company asking them what precautions they recommend.

At least then they should pay out if the worse happens!

As others have said chek with the insurance company what they require and do not be tempted not to insure it. The best security that you can buy is the insurance that you buy that will replace the van if and when some toe rag comes along and takes a fancy to your pride and joy.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

We've just bought a Swift Challenger that has a Tracker fitted. Problem is it costs £250 to get the tracker registered & activated, but it only knocks £19 off the £177 premium.
So do I register the Tracker ?

Our newly acquired Elddis being 1995 is CRIS registered, and the dealer advised we will get the registration documents through the post. But there is a mystery number on the roof which bears no relation to the VIN number. It is 6 digits - I haven't written it down but two of the figures are letters. Very strange - it may have been something relating to a possession of the previous owners. (it is not a postcode!) I'll have another look tomorrow in daylight and report back. When I initiated the insurance I advised that I am using a Bulldog post which is embedded into 2 cubic feet of concrete in the front of the house - the unit is hitch-locked on to this, and I have a wheel clamp fitted. I also declared the Tyrons which we had fitted before collection (the lady asked if we had them)
We have paid less for the insurance on the Elddis than we paid to insure the Pathfinder (how strange), same value including the kit, but no Tyrons on the Pathfinder. Insurance with the C & CC both units.

try additional security measures such as

THIEF BEATERS SYSTEM

And

SKYTAG

Cheap enough and a major deterent to the thief

we have both on ours
