just thumbing through the policy booklet from caravan guard.
under sect 2 liability to the public an exclusion in

"the use of the caravan when being towed, including if it becomes detached from the towing vehicle (this cover should be provided by the insurers of the towing vehicle)"

this clause caused me some confusion.
are they saying that any third party liability will not be covered while the van is being towed whether it stays hitch or detaches itself in transit ?

i contacted them and questioned the clause as the word "use" is not defined but the wording "not in use" is.

the reply was that "use" meant the opposite to "not in use" ie when the caravan is "not in use" and occupied for holiday purposes.

they assured me that cover would be met as long as their was no one in the van "using" it at the time of the transportation ie someone sat in it as you were driving along. a road traffic offence in any case.

i am still not entirely comfortible with the poor definition of "use" and asked for a written clarification, they declined but said they would look at revising the policy wording.

your thoughts and experience on this please.

i have emailed them and await a response.

mat

i have had a phone call from caravan guard and in short
"CHECK YOUR POLICY"

in this case the word "use" means being moved by the towing vehicle.
in other words should the caravan cause third party liability whilst being towed or become detached whilst being towed the insurance claim gets passed over to your car insurance.
if you as a person is moving the caravan by hand or mover then the cover is carried by the caravan insurance.

please check your car insurance policy and ensure you are covered to tow !!!!

All car insurance covers a trailer/caravan for third party while being towed(obviously within the legal towing weight of car), even if it becomes separated in an accident, this would include third party cover even if the caravan became detached(for instance)if it wasn't hooked up properly. Any injuries to people/damage to property caused by the runaway caravan would be covered by the car's insurance so there is no need for the caravan insurance to cover it.

Damage to the caravan in the accident(or in any case) would be covered under your caravan insurance. Your caravan is however covered by your caravan insurance for third party risks when not beinging towed(for instance)if it rolled away on a sloping site & caused injury/damage to third party person/property.

Suprisingly there is no legal requirement to insure a caravan but I would have thought it would be daft not to.
