Hi,

Can anybody help me?

I recently bought a monza 1400 from eBay for next to nothing with the intention of using it for 1 or 2 years to see if we enjoyed caravaning and then upgrading.

I have the van stored on a site in Somerset and have just returned from a weekend break away down there.

The owner of the site commented on the fact that it has Glass Windows and that it is now against the law to tow a caravan with glass windows.....

Can anybody shed any light on this, is it correct and if so can you point me to a website that details ALL of the laws of caravan towing in case there is something else I should know...

Thank you in advance...

Shaun.

Sounds like the site owner will do anything to stop you taking your van away.
Does he need the money?

Carry on enjoying your van for as long as you wish.

Re:- towing `laws` - seemingly very few (not enough?)
Basically if your licence permits it, you stay within vehicle and van towing limits and its "roadworthy" thats about it.

Have a good read on this and other forums, and you will soon see that there are lots and lots of important considerations to take into account, but few "laws".

Where do they get these ideas from. Try asking on a forum for classic caravans or the like. The law generally does not impose limits in retrospect. If all else fails ask a policeman. Years ago, when I was younger we went all the way round the country towing a van with glass windows and the only one we saw with a broken one was because they had pushed the window in while moving the caravan around by hand.

A policeman wouldn't have a clue i'm afraid. Not trying to be derogatory - they can't possibly know everything.

few of the requirements  for modern motor vehicles apply to old vehicles as far as I know. I am sure caravans will be the same. Carry on towing

There are still old vans about with glass windows, they are safety glass as far as I recall, the same as in car side windows.

Thanks for all the replies.

I thought it seemed strange, I don't think that the site owner was intentionally misleading me, I had already agreed to store the van there for the forseeable future so he had nothing to gain by lying to me.

I suspect that somebody has told him this info and he has passed it on thinking he was being helpful.

Panicked me a bit though.... lol

Thanks again.

Shaun

Classic cars without inertia reel seatbelts or none at all fitted stops you driving on the highway?? Hmmm misinformation me thinks.
